Nestle bottled water plant in Columbia River Gorge faces opposition

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Bottled water foes are asking Gov. John Kitzhaber to reject a deal to allow Nestle to build a bottling plant at Cascade Locks in the Columbia River Gorge, 45 miles east of Portland.Nestle wants to bottle spring water, some of which is now used at a nearby salmon hatchery. Nestle is asking the governor to approve a water rights swap that would allow the hatchery to tap city well water.A Washington, D.C., group, Food and Water Watch, is asking the governor to reject Nestle. Kitzhaber hasn't taken a position yet.The Oregonian reports the $50 million plant would bring about 50 jobs.The plant would use 225 gallons per minute of the spring water.
