I'm Red On Just This One Thing...

GO BO SOX!!!!
Boston Red Sox

I know Dubya is a Texas Rangers guy, but it strikes me that this might be an omen... The gutsy underdog from Boston comes from behind and beats the well-funded Yankees.

It would be funny if the World Series ended up pitting a Massachussets team against a Texas team (Astros).

  • (Show?)

The two previous times the Red Sox won a world series in an election year, the Democrats won. Okay, so that was twice, back during the Wilson administration. We'll take what we can get.

Also, I married into a Boston family (by way of Maine), and have succumbed to Red Sox fever. Anyone walking by the house last night would have heard me roaring "Whose your daddy NOW, Yankees!"--strange and undignified behavior for NE Portland.

That was such a great win. Even a Bush victory couldn't sour this year.

Given the long intro at the start of Game 1 of the ALCS, which used Star Wars footage to place Boston as the Rebel Alliance, and New York as the Empire, I was hoping that when Game 7 ended, we'd be treated to a nice shot of the Death Satr exploding.

I also find it intriguing, given how many books about Portland history talk about the early town's "New England sensibilities", that there are so many Red Sox fans in Portland.

    Wasn't Portland almost named Boston?

At least, that's the story I heard - that "they" were trying to decide between Portland (after Portland, Maine) and Boston (after Boston, Mass.) for the name of the city.

(I don't remember who "they" were - presumably a guy from Portland, ME and a guy from Boston, MA.)

  • (Show?)

Yes, that was my hook into being able to talk about the Red Sox today.

That was such a great win. Even a Bush victory couldn't sour this year.

    Bite your tongue!

Anyway, my roomie is a die hard NYY fan. I personally hate baseball (I know, I know - unAmerican - but apple pie is good. Does that redeem me? Anyway...). The other night (Game 4) he was explaining the history-making potential of either scenario - Yanks in 4 or Boston making a comeback from a 3-0 deficit. I said "So what you're saying is that, barring some miracle, The Yanks are going to the World Series?" "Yup," he said smugly.

Needless to say it's been a somber day around the house (and I'm sure everyone at his parents' house is donned in all black - mourning, you know), but I think, much like Kari was saying (only different), we could use more than one miracle by way of Massachussets this year. Hopefully there's not some sort of limit of one. (Not that Kerry actually needs a miracle in its truest sense, but I wouldn't argue with a little divine intervention. lol)

Oh, I see - that was your whole point, b!X. (I'm slow. By the way, Kari, your link didn't work.)

I am glad that the Astros lost, because I don't think I could have handled the irrational cosmic feeling that somehow the outcome of the Presidential election would rest entirely on whether or not the Red Sox could break the curse of the Bambino.

OK, now the Pettygrove link works.

I too was bracing against an Astros/Red Sox series, and breathed a sigh of relief, and then gulped. St. Louis means Ashcroft and -- the one that really rankles -- Rush Limbaugh's brother (David ?) is a Missouri Supreme Court justice. Pulls strings in Rash's case I suspect. Whatever, in my opinion the entire world would be a safer place if the state of Missouri was sedated, not excited. Oh, and there's Anheuser-Somebody there, too, in St. Lou', I think they use Mississippi water, whoever 'they' are. Way too much hat, not enough cattle there. Sorry, Dick Gebhardt. Or, rather, go back to sleep.

B!x sniffs something similar to what my antenna pick up when, (seeing the Series and the Sox are subjects taking relationships prisoner in this town), he uses the word "intriguing." Yeah, there's something to it. Something's in the wind and it's moving standards and shades from sea to shining sea. Yeah, the Series is ominous. Red Sox win. (Cardinals are no pushovers.) Kerry and Dem's win, the Senate at least and it's going to be close in the House. (My optimism is more than any I've heard. The newly-arrived GOP grin-slinger, see: "Katharine Harris aide ...," supposed to help Ameri better give up on that lost cause and look into saving Walden, who's got Bushbrush all over himself and, Republican though they are, eastern Oregon ranchers are no dummies and can see the sense to scrub their own district for the sake of a national House cleaning.)

Something's in the wind. The whiff of Red Sox fever, riot, Wilsonian retribution, whatever you want to say, it is an omen. (Which may contradict the prevailing wisdom to say instead: hold your ballots, don't vote them yet. I don't know. I don't know. The crystal ball is glowing too bright to see in. Watch, and wait for the moon to come full.)

David Limbaugh is an author, cashing in on his brother's name. Stephen Limbaugh is the judge -- appointed by... wait for it... Governor John Ashcroft.

  • (Show?)

Zoiks. Unfortunately the victory now has a body count.

After going a Sox/Yankees game at Fenway over the summer, credited by some now as the turning point for the Sox this season, how could I not be cheering fo the Sox? Here was the post: http://www.blueoregon.com/2004/07/this_isnt_orego.html

    Just launched: Almost Boston.

"A group weblog for Portland (and Oregon) residents of Red Sox Nation."

  • (Show?)

A 3-0 lead! That's absolutely insurmountable, right? Oh that Babe Ruth couldn't be THAT much of a bastard... could he?

  • (Show?)

Tim, no tempting fate allowed. The Yankees were up 3-0 last week. Its the 4-0 lead that's insurmountable, and let's hope they get it! :)

    Last night was beautiful.

As a Dodger fan, it makes me happy to see at least one of the Martinez brothers perform like that. They were outstanding in blue; in fact, Ramon was considered better than Pedro, back then.

Considering all the mental baggage that Pedro has as a result of his performances in the ALCS (the Yankees just got inside his head), I have to put this right up there with Schilling's on a bum ankle.

Pedro DEALT last night, and after the second, STL couldn't touch him. That two-seamer belt-high inside to get Edmonds in the 6th(?) is up there with some of the best strikeout pitches, ever.

    Nicely done.
