Doyle Resigns
Dan Doyle has resigned from the Oregon legislature.
State Rep. Dan Doyle, R-Salem, under investigation for potential election law violations, resigned from his post in the Oregon Legislature this morning....
“Rep. Doyle submitted a letter of resignation from office to the Secretary of State today," Minnis said. "I wish the Doyle family well and hope the process to fill his seat will move quickly so that his constituents will have a voice at the Legislature.”
This came on the heels of yet more bad news for the Doyle family, as reports out today finger Doyle's wife Victoria for similar kinds of false finance reporting on her own failed bid to become Marion County clerk.
Doyle, who served as her own treasurer, reported writing a $1,500 check to her husband for secretarial services. She also reported sending a $2,000 check to Recell Inc. for campaign management services....
On April 12, she reported receiving cash payments of $30, $50 and $300 from herself and her husband. On May 6, she appears to have re-characterized the same three payments as cash from herself alone. On June 3, she appears to have re-characterized the same three payments as in-kind donations from herself.

The D's must be smelling an opportunity right now.
Until Doyle's replaced, the R advantage is just 32-27.
Have Gov. Ted flip three squishy Republicans with appointment promises as fast as he can. Convince them to support a tax increase and place new ridiculous restrictions on signature gathering so it can't be referred.
You know someone is already floating the idea.

So what's the process for replacing Doyle? Is it a Marion County commissioners' appointment following party lines?

County party selects a date within then next 30 days for a convention to fill the vacancy. Registered Republicans from that district, that have lived in the district for a year or greater; submit to the Republican Party of Marion County their intent to fill the vacancy. Then Precinct Persons of the Republican Party of Marion county selects x number of potential candidate(s) from the list of individuals that filed a intent to fill the vacancy. Then the County party submitted the list of potential candidate(s); and then the County Commissioners could select a person from that list; or on a rare occasion they select another R in the district.
However, the clock is ticking.
This is now the third special convention to fill a vacant seat in the legislature this year.
How many more special conventions by this summer will this state have?

If Doyle's district is completely within Marion County, then the Marion County Republican Central Committee gets to nominate three potential appointees.
Then the Marion County Board of Commissioners appoints someone from the nominees.
If Doyle's district covers more than one county, or the Rep. Central Committee(s) don't nominate correctly then it becomes more complicated.

Guy's a pushover. In the Northeast, a pol would stay in the leg or on a council until he was charged with a felony at least. (Preferably convicted. Maybe even do the time and run for office afterward.)

It's my understanding the precinct folks down here have 20 days to produce a slate of 3-5 republican candidates. The County Commissioners then have 10 days to pick one. Unanswered questions remain, however, as to why Dan resigned so quickly. The Republican leadership surely can't claim ignorance when it comes to Doyle's financial scandals. In my research, I found Dan was connected to other lawmakers in a way they may not want public.
The party needs to now decide whether it will do what it takes to win this seat.

This is an indictment of a couple of meta-process-y things. The first is how did the State Dems not spot how vulnerable this guy was and throw everything including several kitchen sinks behind the Grisham effort to unseat Doyle in November. The second, is how superficially lazy was the reportage from the Statesman Journal that they could actually come out with a limp noodle endorsement of Doyle over Grisham. I don't care how inexperienced a candidate is - there are pets living with BO readers who could have been better elected representatives for Marion Co than Doyle, and Grisham far outstripts them :).

As a side note, MacD has the above-mentioned OTHER Marion County news addressed here. It's a doozy getting national and global press (CNN and Reuters), and judging by the posts hitting ORBlogs, those of us who live here have some opinions, as well.

John D has it right on the money! If you know a member of the current House Dem. caucus, be sure to communicate that with them.
It wouldn't hurt to communicate your views on the SJ to them--their email addresses as I recall are at the bottom of articles. Not that they will necessarily respond.

John and LT thanks for the comment. FYI, I was criticized for only one thing by the Statesman Journal Ed Board and specifically Dick Hughes (the editor) who actually wrote the "endorsement." That one thing? Warning the paper's board that Doyle would continue his corrupt behavior if re-elected. Don't be too hard on them though-they're the best paper in town.

Thanks for the link, Doty. It has been quite a news day in Oregon. Disgraced legislator's resignation probed. A very l-o-o-n-g knife makes an appearance in the state seat of goverment. Nazis suffer a setback in Salem. And, we haven't even reached sex crimes yet.
