Finally, a KPOJ local show.

Thomhartmann_1This just in. Thom Hartmann, who's been a guest host for Air America host Randi Rhodes, will now be doing a live local show on Portland's progressive radio KPOJ AM 620. It will be in addition to his national show on the Sirius digital radio network.

From KPOJ:

Clear Channel Radio Portland announced today that AM 620 KPOJ would add a brand new live, local morning show to its Progressive Talk line-up. Beginning Monday, April 18, nationally syndicated talk host and best selling author, Thom Hartmann, will host the KPOJ morning show weekdays from 6am-9am.

Hartmann comes to KPOJ from Vermont where he's been hosting his own progressive talk radio show for the past two years. KPOJ listeners will know Thom from his days of filling in for Air America radio host, Randi Rhodes during the past few months. Hartmann is the award-winning, best-selling author of fourteen books currently in print in more than a dozen languages on four continents.

"Portland has been a second home for me for the past twenty years," said Thom Hartmann. "I'm so pleased to be living and working in a 'blue state' where I have so many friends and family."

Joining Hartmann in the morning will be veteran radio news anchor, Heidi Tauber. Tauber has worked at several Portland radio stations including NewsRadio 1190 KEX.

KPOJ will also add long-time radio news and talk show producer, Paul Pimentel, to the morning program.

"The two most asked listener questions since launching AM 620 KPOJ have been – 'When will you get a live, local show?' and 'Can you please add Thom Hartmann to your line-up?'" said Mike Dirkx, KPOJ Operations Manager. "The solution was simple. Get Thom to do a live, local show! And, that's what we've done."

Discuss.

Local? Is this guy from Oregon?

  • (Show?)

    He is now.

I'm disappointed that our lobbying for Jefferson Smith didn't pay off (yet), but I'm still tickled about having a show focused on local issues other than KBOO and Lars.

  • (Show?)

And now let's get some really local shows on the weekend to replace the repeats and the sports, eh? And how about a better website... blog... C'mon Clear Channel, you've got the bucks (and all the billboards in Portland)

    Welcome to Portland, Thom!

Well that's disappointing. I thought the point of having a local talk radio show was having a local talk radio show.

Thom Hartmann rules! Seriously... he's one of the most relevant progressive voices out there. Very progressive, yet frames the issues in a historical context so well that he makes it very clear that progressives are the real patriots in this country.

He's not a table-top pounder. He's exactly the type of front person for progressivism to lead the left back into the mainstream.

    Excellent news :-)

This is really great news! Wow, made my day!!!

I haven't heard Thom yet, but he will be a welcome change from the basically unlistenable "Morning Sedition." Welcome, Thom!

Good News, though my wife will miss Morning Sedition. I also like the idea of Jefferson Smith doing a Saturday morning show. We have Serius so we hear Thom Hartman on Talk Left, he's good.

I've become quite a fan of the Morning Sedition and will really miss it. In fact, I'm really very upset about not being able to hear Mark and Mark anymore. They are hilarious and neurotic and extremely entertaining. I feel like a friend is moving away.

  • (Show?)

I too enjoy Morning Sedition. But we absolutely must have talk radio that discusses local issues from a progressive perspective.

Thom is a great radio personality. I think he'll be fantastic.

I agree that KPOJ needs to get more local people/topics on the weekends.

    Whatever happened to Sheila Hamilton?

What great news! I hope the show will also be "podcast" (i.e., posted as MP3's on a web site with an RSS feed).

And it is sad to see people already criticizing Thom for his lack of local credentials. Criticize the show for not having enough local content when it gets up and running, but don't criticize the guy for not being born here. We live in a dynamic region full of people who aren't from here. Why are they here? Because knowing what a great place it is, they love it here. These are the people who could live anywhere and they have made an active choice to call this place their home. I'd rather give those newcomers the respect they deserve. The best people I've met in Oregon aren't really from Oregon (at least originally).

Well this made my day....Thom Hartman is, as afs stated one of the most relevant progressive voices out there. Very progressive, yet frames the issues in a historical context so well that he makes it very clear that progressives are the real patriots in this country. ....and coming from Dean country no less.

I think this is great, we need an answer to Lars and his lies, I know Thom is not originally from Oregon but neither was Lars and at least he will be living in Portland unlike Lars who is living in WA but infers that he still live here. Maybe somewhere down the road they could have a debate in a public forum and all of the proceeds go to a homeless shelter (lars favorite people)…..or maybe not Lars would back out of it because he could not cut off Thom and say, “sorry I’m up against the clock”. WELCOME TO OREGON THOM AND STICK THE TO RIGHT.

kind of a bummer. mark and mark are a riot. but in the long run it's probably good to have a local on in the am. he is braodcasting from portland, right? and only to portland, right?

Thom's show on KPOJ will be live and local, will only be for KPOJ listeners, and originate from the station's Portland studios.

Then, at 9 AM PT, Thom will turn around and do his national show, presumably from the same studio complex. (Either that, or he'll have to drive really fast to another location! :) )

He'll be doing 6 straight hours of talk radio... 3 local for KPOJ and Portland, then 3 national for his existing affiliate base.

kind of a bummer. mark and mark are a riot.

Morning sedition is not a live show in Portland. As I understand it, they are moving to the 3-6 am slot.

I occasionally publish some of Thom's articles on my web site, and having read 2 of his books, I can say unreservedly that we are very lucky to have him in Oregon.

i realize mark and mark are not based in portland. you'd have to really not be paying attention to not know that. moving to 3-6am, huh? well, i sure wont get to listen to that very much! what we really need, is someone local going against Lars from 11-2 or thereabouts. are you listening KPOJ? ditch that rightie Dem eddie and put someone local on at noon!

On my way to work I listened to Thom. For 40 minutes on my commute he did nothing to stir by blood like the Marks. I will remain optimistic that he will get warmed up to us. Bush Sr. called Portland little Beirut. I want someone to make more noise. Something more seditious would be nice. But it is a start.

PS - I had volunteered to make some noise on KPOJ. My attitude is "The meat is on the bottom and if you don't stir the pot, you get nothing but broth." I think I could get people's attention and get them motivated to act. If we don't get a Clean Vote, all is lost.

I think Thom is great and, SO WHAT, he's not from Oregon? I'm not from Oregon either and guess what, 2/3 of the people who live here now aren't from Oregon either according to the last census report. This have been a personal pet pieve of mine since I've lived here-13 years okay.
I have friends here who were born here and have no clue how to navigate around the Portland Metropolitan Area like I do. Never read about Oregon's History like I have and they went to grade, junior and high schoool here-not me. I'm from Indiana and believe me, I don't walk around saying I'm a Native Hoosier-like Dan Quayle, yeck! I never understood the native Oregonian thing. Thom Hartmann is great and will do a great job. Heidi sounds pretty enthusiastic and will do a good job as well. I miss Mark and Mark too.
Done venting, back to your regular programming.

Well, it's a shame that KPOJ never gave Unfiltered a chance at that time slot -- it was the best thing on the Air America repertoire -- but it's not a bad thing to move the Marks to their actual live time and it's a Really Good Thing that they're not picking up Springer. Have you heard him? Droning, repetitious and worse than Sam and Janeane at missing a point right in front of him.

You all know, don't you, that you can go to the archive to download the Marks to your computer or mp3 player? So, see, you're not even losing out on the chance to hear them on tape delay!
