Olympia Snowe is a Democrat?

Jeff Alworth

I've had a mighty week, culminating with a mighty day (in which the words "kitchen" and "remodel" figured prominently).  Consequently, there'll be no Week in Review.  I'll try not to make it a habit.  But because I'm on the soapbox anyway, let me leave you with the words of wisdom from the Oregon GOP (to whose mailing list I subscribe).  In fact, let's make a game of it: see how many faults of logic, fact, and reason they made in one short paragraph.

Key Issues of the Week: Democrats Continue Obstruction
On Tuesday, Democrats prepared an orchestrated assault against President Bush’s plan to reform Social Security, which targeted key lawmakers that included Senator Gordon Smith. Senator Smith, who’s a member of the Senate Finance Committee, is thought to be a key player in this Social Security debate for several reasons. Not only is he a member of the Finance Committee, but he will also be one of the first to vote on any renovation of the retirement system. While Democrats continue to the obstructionist tactics, they offer no plan for social security reform. Contact Senator Ron Wyden, Congressman David Wu, Congressman Peter DeFazio, Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Congresswoman Darlene Hooley and urge them to support the President’s plan for real reform!

If only it wasn't for those darn Democrats with their pesky minority, we'd have gutted Social Security already!

Yeah, if only the GOP ran Congress, they might get something done already. Oh wait, what's that? No... Really?!

    Nevermind.

Obstructionist tactics? Gotta love the unity the GOP tries to create so that compromises can be worked out.

Also, glad to know I'm not the only one who subscribes to GOP stuff.

Of course, if you were subscribed to the Oregon GOP's mailing list back on September 29th, your email address (and nearly 2400 others) was released into the wild - where spammers, scam artists, and conservative fundraisers would be able to grab it.

See my article: Ouch. Oregon GOP Divulges Nearly 2400 Email Addresses

This was, of course, a massive privacy violation - and they never apologized to their subscribers.

What was the nature of the spam? I get a lot of spam anyway, so it's difficult to tell. Of course, I've been a loyal subscriber for some time.

I agree with the general privacy concerns, but I think Kari's claim about these sorts of e-mails being a major source of spam is a bit overblown.

Putting your e-mail address on a web site (such as here on BO in our comment signatures) is a far greater risk for "harvesting" by spammers than having your address accidentally released in an e-mail to 2400 targeted recipients. Unless, of course, one of those recipients is themself a spammer or scam artist. But then, since they're evil Republicans and all...   ;-)

David - Good point ordinarily, but there is a solution here at BlueOregon... just type in a url in the field below your email (I personally use blueoregon.com) and it, not your email, will be the hyperlink attached to your name.

Thanks for the reminder, Tim. I actually prefer to use a real address so that people can get in touch with me directly if they want -- and a few very nice people here have. But that's a privacy trade-off that each person must decide for himself, and I appreciate the URL option that you pointed out.

Fortunately, I have yet to receive a single extraneous message at the address I use here.

Of course, now that I've said that, I'm sure the deluge will begin...   :-D

Our obstructionist tactics are apparently working <evil laugh=""> - Only 1/3 of Americans polled think Bush has a handle on the SSI "problem." Guess that nationwide tour was just a working vacation at taxpayer expense....

    Recent polling from CNN.com.

the only danger from Blue Oregon is progressive porn spam...what form that would take i'll leave up to your imagination.

Ain't it funny how the verbage changes. Generally, one thinks the conservatives are the ones who oppose change, but now it;'s the progressives oppposing change. Social Security worked for 60+ years, and Dubya and his dogs want to get their teeth into it to feed the predatory wolves on Wall street. [Hey, wasn't that a campaign commercial?] I am not opposed to investors and Wall Street. It serves it's purpose, but when the meager rations of Social Security are pillaged by these corporation who cannot make any promises about the returns, it is not a rational consideration for the people.

What is the most unfortunate aspect of this debate is that in these times promises mean nothing anyway. Pensions vanish, contracts are not bindings and this President can't make any statements under oath, because he knows the truth would damage him.
