OregonLive.com goes down

Wow.

Welcome to OregonLive.com. Due to a power failure we're experiencing technical difficulties. Full service will be resumed as soon as possible. We expect to have all of The Oregonian's content and archives available tomorrow. -- OregonLive.com

Not only is OregonLive.com down, so is MassLive.com, NOLA.com, AL.com, Cleveland.com, PennLive.com, and all the rest of the Advance.Net family.

Will the Oregonian report it in the newspaper?

This same thing happened during the August 2003 blackout in the Northeast.

(Meanwhile, speaking of downed things, let's see if Typepad times out again upon submitting this comment.)

And upon its return, OregonLive will be redesigned, searchable, and usable.

    Right :(

Bad rubbish, good riddance. I'd as soon wait for it to never show up again than to show up "redesigned, searchable, and usable," hardly to mention as if it were written from an independent, well-reported base.

As has been said several times here, good riddance to bad rubbish. Get the hard-copy and use the ugly, limping one-eyed on-line monstrosity on a strictly by-need basis. Here's an extended version of the same argument.

    If you're interested in why:

There was a fire in the building where our server is housed and we don't know how much longer it will take to get the site back up and running. Our email is down as well
Huh. So much for redundant servers housed in geographically distinct locations. You'd think Jeff Jarvis would know better! ;)

Bix, as to the Typepad issues... from tech support:

Thank you for the report. We apologize for the problem... we are aware that some subscribers are experiencing sluggishness with the application and our ops team is working on correcting the issue. Please keep an eye on the status blog for updates: http://status.sixapart.com/

Ugh, don't even get me started on Oregon Live.

I used to work for them. Heaven forbid they actually do any news, or have their people work locally, or stop people who do things like talking about walking into the PPS Admin building with an automatic weapon and blowing them all away...

Their site is nothing short of a conservative freak show.

Bush administration annexes internet Bush administration annexes internet

By Kieren McCarthy ([email protected]) Published Friday 1st July 2005 10:41 GMT http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/01/bush_net_policy/

An extraordinary statement by the US government has sent shockwaves around the internet world and thrown the future of the network into doubt. In a worrying U-turn, the US Department of Commerce (DoC) has made it clear it intends to retain control of the internet's root servers indefinitely. It was due to relinquish that control in September 2006, when its contract with overseeing body ICANN ended. The decision - something that people have long feared may happen - will not only make large parts of the world furious but also ...

Somebody tell The O they can sue the Department of Commerce because they don't got any.

What's interesting here is that I know they were planning a west coast mirror site, to include production capabilities (the publishing system resides in Jersey City, or did).
