Happy Birthday to Randy “Duke” Cunningham!

Charlie Burr

Over at the Republican National Committee, there’s a helpful reminder (lower right hand of screen) of disgraced Congressman Duke Cunningham’s birthday today. Hat tip to Politicalwire, who provided the screen capture. (Also, btw, the first RNC headline on the left - “In Case You Missed It” – links to Oregon’s own David Reinhard, which represents a unique inversion of the normal flow of talking points.)

Fortunately for well-wishers looking for that special gift, Tuesday federal authorities opened a warehouse full of bribes received by the Republican Congressman to reporters, reducing chances of giving the guy something he already has. Apparently, Duke adores antiques.

From the story: The furnishings included French dressers with burled walnut and marble, a sleigh-style bed and a hand-woven Persian carpet that stretched more than 30 feet and had a $5,500 price tag still attached.

In fairness, YOU try decorating a $2.5 million dollar spread. It's hard work.

So, what do you give the Congressman who has everything? A cake with a file in it? A lifetime supply of Kleenex?

Or maybe a change in leadership and culture to remove such temptations.

Sorry, here's a better link to the "Reporters Get Peek Into Cunningham Bribes" story.

The Republican's can't even do a good job of taking bribes. A real 30 foot "Persian carpet" would cost closer to $55,000, not $5,500. Sounds like the Duke was taking some pretty low rent bribes. Anything worth doing is worth doing well!

I see the makings of the runaway sitcom of the season:

From soft money to hard time...

One's a crooked Congressman and self-proclaimed patriot who's taken millions in defense bribes. One's an architect of preemptive war who's joined a conspiracy to out a CIA agent (OOPS!).

Together, they're NEO-CONS, the feel good show that's got everyone talking.

    Great idea, "dude"!

Maybe we can pitch that sitcom to Fox.

    On second thought....
