What happens at Dorchester, stays at Dorchester.

DorchestermontageThat's right, Blue Oregonians, this weekend is the annual Dorchester Conference -- when Republicans go wild and crazy.

And if you're feeling adventurous, you could go crazy with 'em.

Two years ago, BlueOregon contributor Anne Martens showed up - and here's what she discovered:

There were a ton of young people there. I mean a ton. Don’t go out on the dance floor alone ladies, because a swarm of baseball-capped young bucks will soon surround you – leaving you no choice but to freak one of them or execute a well-timed dive though their legs off the floor to freedom. Linda “Raise the Roof” Flores is a regular party in a pink jacket: the woman danced her ass off to every song, including George Michael’s model of moral values, “I want your sex.” Brian Boquist showed up in full Roosevelt Roughrider regalia, complete with belt o’ bullets. ... An overly inebriated young man who was hanging rather closely on his slightly less inebriated buddy charged me when I told him that Jesus would still love him if they just made out.

Of course, there was a certain incident involving a couple of lovely folks from the GOP legislative leadership offices, and well, never mind. And last year, a bit of a dust-up over a skit that some attendees found offensive.

But forget all that drama. Dorchester is fun! You can see Gordon Smith in his nifty sweaters, and ask him tough and incisive questions like "Is it acceptable to wear a white V-neck sweater after Labor Day? Can I wear an American Flag sweater even if it's not July 4th? And, is that Polo Ralph Lauren you're wearing?"

Oh, and this year! The Saturday keynote speaker is David Reinhard! David Reinhard, everybody! He's so dreamy...

More about Dorchester here - including those wacky photos - and their slogan: Where politics is fun...

A: To hypothesize that cons can walk on water...

While all these Republican hot shots and would-be hot shots are busy schmoozing and sucking up to each other and not paying attention, could we build a wall around the place and rename it to Oregon State Hospital for the Politically Deranged? They deserve to be locked up for a year with David Reinhard.

WE SHOULD ALL GO! Seriously we should all go. more importantly someone with a video camera should go there is nothing like evidence. But here is something to consider why do so many young people show up to thier meetings?????? Is it the catch the illegal alien games they get to play at their colleges? What is it?

I am not sure that Gandhi's call to "be the change you seek" applies to semi-snarky party politics, but I have pasted below a release I sent to Oregon political reporters last night which incldes a list of questions that people probably won't be asking Gordon Smith at tonight's Dorchester "town hall".

Maybe folks want to add to the list here? :)

DEMOCRATIC CHAIR CANDIDATE HAS A FEW QUESTIONS FOR GORDON SMITH’S DORCHESTER TOWN HALL

As Republicans gather for their annual Dorchester conference to plot political strategy, nationally-known Democratic strategist Dan Carol, who is running to serve as the Oregon Democratic Party Chair on March 10, today offered Gordon Smith a preview of what strategic roadblock may soon lay ahead for him. A spirited challenge from Oregon Democrats.

“After nearly 12 years in office, Gordon Smith is still struggling to define his core values to Oregon voters and even many of those in his own party after his recent waffling on the war. Elections hinge on trust, and that’s why Gordon Smith is very vulnerable in 2008.”

Carol’s candidacy for state chair is focused on strengthening the party’s recent House and statewide electoral gains, widening the appeal of the Oregon Democratic Party to younger Democrats, Independents and Republicans of Conscience and recapturing the US Senate seat now held by Smith. Carol knows Smith’s real record well, serving as the Research Director for the opposing Wyden campaign in 1995 in the only election loss Gordon Smith has ever suffered.

Said Carol: “Frankly it is time that Oregonians had a second senator that they could trust to be on their side, rather than to take all sides on nearly every issue. That’s why I’d like to see Senator Smith answer more than a series of softball questions at the GOP town hall in Dorchester Friday night”. A set of alternative questions are attached.

“If elected chair, I will make a point of delivering these questions personally at a future town hall, together with more queries from Democratic challengers who will soon vie for the honor to work with Senator Ron Wyden as a winning team for Oregon’s future starting in January 2009.”

QUESTIONS THAT THE GOP WON’T ASK GORDON SMITH FRIDAY

IRAQ If you get re-elected, will you switch back to supporting President Bush’s failed Iraq war policy like you did four years before?

The Dorchester conference is having a briefing on the Bush Iraq policy on Saturday. Will you stay at the conference to explain your stand on the surge? Do you have a stand if the surge fails? How long should we wait to judge success?

    WINDFALL OIL PROFITS

Perhaps it is not surprising given your flip-flop on the issue of oil drilling in the Arctic, but why are you not helping Ron Wyden lead the fight to stop giving away billions in taxpayer funds to the oil companies – billions that could fuel freedom from foreign oil dependence with domestically grown biofuels and clean power in Eastern Oregon? That is money out of the pockets of Oregon farmers and ranchers and drivers – and money in the pockets of the Saudi princes.

    ETHICS

What exactly was your relationship with Jack Abramoff’s ring of corruption? You held several fundraisers at a D.C. restaurant that Abramoff owned, and took thousands of dollars in campaign donations from Abramoff and his tribal client, including in the last days of your 2002 Senate campaign. As a member of the Indian Affairs Committee, and given the millions in stolen funds, don’t you owe more of an explanation to all affected tribal communities given the scale of this corruption?

    Linda Flores?!?

The very same Linda Flores who failed to pay state and federal taxes while holding office? The same Linda Flores who ranks dead last in Willy Weeks annual ranking of our elected officials in terms of influence, intelligence, and integrity?

God I'm embarrassed to live in her district.

I noticed on the sponsor page that Bridgeview Winery and Williamette Valley Vineyards were both listed.

Well thats two wineries that will never get my business again.

Here's an interesting historical factoid for you: Dorchester Republicans voted in favor of resolutions to legalize abortion in both the 1967 and 1969 conferences.

The Oregon Republicans were progressives back then. Wish it could get back to that, but I'm losing hope.

The sponsors page also lists "Rep. Billy Dalto" as a sponsor. He's not a Representative, he's unemployed. Well, unless you count his failed, lawbreaking consulting business.

Wal-Mart is also their top sponsor. Lovely.
