Yes, Senator Obama, but what will you DO about Voldemort?

Today's the day. The day when the entire world finds out what's going to come of the most evil person in the universe. No, not Dick Cheney. (He's just going to be acting president for the day.)

How important a cultural phenomenon is Harry Potter? Just ask Barack and Michelle Obama...

Pardon my onionesque take on Dick's day playing President, but i couldn't resist:

Friday, July 20, 2007 Friday Dump

Dick Cheney to ASSume Presidency. No Shit!

In a last ditch effort to find weapons of mass destruction, President George W. Bush will undergo a colonoscopy during a weekend retreat at Camp David, said White Wash spokesman Tony Snowjob, whose own colon is not only cancer free, but WMD free as well. Vice President Dick Cheney will serve as acting President, a post slightly lower than the one he currently holds.

Yup, Deadeye Dick is in charge and I hear he just signed off on the commutation of his own planned prison term for high war crimes.

A guy can't be too careful, you know.

Oh, and he also upgraded Tricky Dick from the Seventh Gate of Hell to a nice, partial view room in Purgatory.

    Heaven can wait.

You ask me, that's a coupla TIRED campaigners.

If Barack is able to pull it off, it will be for exactly the reason highlighted in this clip--his naturalness and ease with real American reality. (Not the ginned-up faux NASCAR reality that the GOP has been selling for 15 years, wherein wealthy Senators drawl Southernly and folksy before hopping aboard a corporate-funded jet to a junket in some sunny clime.)

I've even heard Hillary get her "folk" on. It doesn't really mind. For me accents are infectious. I've got this "family reunion speak" for when i'm back out in the hinterland.

As for the Obamas, i think Peter's got it right. They're not demonstrating "naturalness and ease" so much as jetlag.

The naturalness comes about by knowning that Harry's coming out, knowing what book it is, having read it with his kids, and knowing what a big deal it is. For eight years, I've heard about how every Republican from George Bush to Don Rumsfeld is "down-to-earth," despite being some of the least down-to-earth, most privileged and isolated people on the planet. But they looked a little tired, too. Obama's running for President AND a US senator in the middle of a massive debate on Iraq. He's probably in a permanent daze.

Now, when the new Harry Potter book arrives, it will only get worse...

I simply cannot fathom the excitement over middling teen fantasy books...

Oh lord...Darth Cheney will be in charge for the day. What's new about that really?

I see the connection between the video and the fact that the last Harry Potter book came out last night (big whop). Other then that this seems like nothing more then a jab at the Obama camp by an Edward's supporter.

They asked Bush the same question. He said, "I got no problem with shopping at Voldemort. They always have low prices."

    haha...good one jack ;)

Huh. A jab at Obama? I don't get it.

I posted this item because I thought it reflected WELL on both Barack and Michelle. As Alworth pointed out, it shows that they're in touch with the real world. (That is, our world - not Harry Potter's.)

Let me just go on record: I think Barack Obama kicks ass. I think he's a great candidate, and would make an excellent president.

I'm supporting John Edwards, but Barack is a close second in my book. My hope is for an Edwards/Obama ticket.

You've not seen me take a personal shot at Obama yet, and you won't. (Though I have some quibbles with some of his policy positions.)

    Kari and Jeff:

"Being real," along the lines of being in touch with your kids or the media or the consultants enough to know that a popular book is coming out, is not a qualification for office, nor is it something draw voters into your camp.

Being "fake" can hurt you (e.g. HW Bush and the $10 gallon of milk), but being "real" on that level can't help. It may draw people in, but it won't close the deal. I believe the Constitution clearly states that only humans can be elected President, anyway.

Of course, being "real" certainly CAN hurt you if you make too much of a point of it. Picture Dukakis on a tank, or Gore in flannels with a lumberjack laughing behind him.

Image is important, but analysis of image on this level is geekery beyond even my patience…next story, please.
