Alaska: Ted Stevens indicted
in the news

NBC News reports that U.S. Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) has been indicted.

Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator and a figure in Alaska politics since before statehood, has been indicted on seven counts of falsely reporting hundreds of thousands of dollars in services he received from a company that helped renovate his home.

Stevens, 84, has been dogged by a federal investigation into whether he pushed for fishing legislation that also benefited his son, an Alaska lobbyist.

From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said Stevens concealed "his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation."

Stevens is up for re-election this year - and faces a strong challenge from the mayor of Anchorage, Mark Begich. Lots of detailed discussion about the electoral implications at DailyKos.

Discuss.

Hard to believe that someone in the oil industry bribed an Alaska politician. I'm shocked, absolutely shocked.

Dems have a good candidate in the Alaska senate race. Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich offers the Dems their best chance of electing a Dem senator in a long time. I think the last Dem senator from Alaska was elected in 1974.

Hopefully the stench of Repub corruption will spread over the entire election and Dems will be intelligent enough to take advantage.

Begich is as good as in.

I'm wondering what is the time line for Stevens trial. I understand the case has been assigned to a judge, but will it take months or years?
