Overly O-motional

Karol Collymore

I have Obama election anxiety. I think about him winning - or losing - all day long. I watch TV news with heightened stress and pray there is no October surprise. I fret while listening to the multi-cultural NPR shows that thoughtfully debate and discuss the impact of race, age and gender on voting. I worry about Election Day celebrations and hope that we can all keep our heads, no matter the outcome. But there is a whole other section to my Obama anxiety; my ridiculously emotional reaction to everything Obama.

I cry when I hear the swelling of his voice at the climax of his speeches. I cry when I see pictures of him and his wife on Huffington Post. I cry when I hear Stevie Wonder. I want to throw my arms around people wearing Obama clothes. I cried today because my friend Raul who works for Obama is next to him in a new, very sweet video about a stellar volunteer:

That Charles is amazing. I wanted to be married for 69 years and now it's too late! UGH! More tears! I'm already a basketcase and now, this: Yes we can hold babies, a blog with pictures of Obama and children from around the country. Check it out, especially the little African American boys who simply look up, smiling and in awe of this man running for president. I am O-motional for them, too. Where are my tissues?!?

As a white guy with all the advantages that go with being a white guy in our culture, it may sound strange for me to say that when Senator Obama becomes president I wish, for that moment, that I could be a black man. I'm pretty sure that my safe white middle class existance will never provide me anything like the euphoria that some of us will experience sometime late Tuesday night.

Thanks Karol for your emotion and passion in what will be a historic and healing victory for our party, and most of all, for our country. Thanks also for the link to that video. It was truly moving.

I too, get pretty emotional about Obama. Maybe it's because I love our country so much and am so tired of seeing so many people losing out on America's promise. It's great to see that there's a person running for President that understands what the country needs and that he's captured our imagination, earned our trust and respect, and most of all, our hopes and our help.

I'm gonna be bawling my head off on Election Night and on Inauguration Day, one way, or god-forbid, the other.

Didja see the comments by Larry David on HuffPost about how antsy he is about the election? He compared it to awaiting the results of a biopsy, "only you get those results in a few days." That's pretty much how I've been feeling.

Any time I come across one of those maps with the poll numbers for every state, I study it for way too long, and click on all the things that can be clicked. I still don't trust any lead in Florida and am worried about Pennsylvania and Ohio. This is pretty strange because I'm typically a local issues guy and I don't get caught up so much in the presidential race. But this is a far from typical year.

    Blahhh!!

I'm sorry I just puked on my shoes.

Obama is a man, nothing more, nothing less. He is not a god, and is not going to save us all.

He will work for US as president. The election process is a job interview.

  • (Show?)

I'm with you Karol--Omotional indeed. That is a fantastic vid and I'll be sending it around today. What a nice way to start the day. And you can still make 69 years of marriage--you just have to live to be 100!

Bob: we're at the crossroads of history, man. "Blaaah" all you want, but some of us are going to pause and get carried away by the moment. These don't come around very often.

Yo Bob, you're right, the election is a sort of prolonged job interview, and the president works for us, but try to set the cynicism aside for a moment. If the thoughts expressed in the video and Ms. Collymore's piece don't connect for you, then think about, say, the feelings of the immigrant who busted his butt for years at lousy jobs, suffered the slings and arrows of racial prejudice, and then, one day, gets to watch his child graduate with honors from Harvard, or Stanford, or UC Berkeley. If you can't conceive of how that person might feel, well, I think your heart may have ossified.

No ossification, but it seems like a critical blunder to elect a man who is so unqualified and radical that he will ruin opportunities for future candidates of backgrounds other than WASP.

Heck, his own running mate had recently stated that he is going to be tested and will alienate a majority of the country in the process. This doesn't sound like the vote of confidence that is needed for many independents to come over the the Obama ticket.

Getting so emotional over a person's identity is a mistake, and it will harm long-term objectives the party seeks to achieve. Many people, including myself, do not want a president elected by American Idol. I wish more people would look into issues and choose instead of identity. If you do not understand their positions and the issues you might as well be voting for home coming queen.

Bob sez: "it seems like a critical blunder to elect a man who is so unqualified and radical"

Bob--you've got something misspelled here. WOMAN is spelled "woman", not "man".

Now take your concern trolling somewhere else.

This level of emotion over another human being is not healthy. I grant you a reasonable amount of excitement over the potential success of a candidate with whom you agree and support. I grant you a great deal of excitement over the possible election of our country's first African American president. But there is a line where you should reevaluate how absolute your devotion has become.

Senator Obama is just another person and as such is fallible. He can be wrong, I assure you that he has made mistakes in the past and will make mistakes in the future (as we all have) and the extreme level of enthusiasm and support you are gushing is going to put you in a situation where you will be extremely let down or you will have to compromise your beliefs in order to maintain this worship.

We as Americans need to be careful about how we view ourselves and others. We are not all equal but not one of us deserves to be worshiped and followed with absolute devotion. Maintaining a critical view of our leadership and holding them accountable for acts and decisions as a boss would an employee is our part in this the best governmental system on the planet.

I've been going against type here in the the post primary season too. Downloading pics of Michelle and Barack on stage with their easy and genuine intimacy and affection on display, the obviously well adjusted girls with their playful and sassy attitudes, or my favorite, which I now have as wallpaper on my PC, Obama facing the camera with the caption:

Everybody chill the fuck out, I got this! caption.

You can start counting at 1968. 40 years of living in a Right wing fantasy world......We have a right to be excited/terrified/hopeful, and while I'm trying to stick with my default cynicism, but this is hands down, the best presidential candidate that I've ever voted for, and it's about time too.

I spend at least the first hour of every day checking the vsarious polls and electoral projection sites. Then I go to HuffPost and then check in here a few times a day.

I was really depressed during that short period when the McCain/Palin ticket was ahead. But my first gut reaction that Palin was the best choice... for Barack Obama... has been vindicated.

To me, its not so much as waiting for a biopsy result as waiting for Christmas. I do worry about the Grinch, but November 4 cannot come too early for me. I feel like i am living in an historical time.

For the least of my brothers (or cousins and uncles

It looks like more family is showing up.

So Obama ran to HI to visit his Grandma, funny that Michelle didn't go? I wonder if he was making sure the birth cert didn't get released...

Man is it going to suck when he turns out not to be a natural born citizen.

Sickening, you can not decide the future of this country on your emotions. Seek psychiatric help, immediately. I will be voting on Nov. 4 with a clear head and a clear mind. I do not want a federal militia guarding the country on the inside. I do not want to be crucified if I dare ask "the one," a question. I do not want a President that believes the Constitution is deeply flawed, how will he take an oath to protect and defend it. Obama is not a God, he is a man that has hoodwinked half of this nation. Please, for the sake of the rest of us, leave your emotions out of this and vote for a man that will protect this good America.

People please get a grip on your emotions! This is too important an election-please vote with a clear head! Do your home work and research & look up this guys voting record Theres a reason he was dubbed "the most liberal senator". Now because he wants to be president, he wants so badly to appeal to all of America, he has changed his tune, becoming more moderate. In other words hes a hipocrate, just another politician trying to win votes at any cost. Why doesn't he have any paper trails? Websites have been scrubbed of clean of any info on former ties he had, large chunks of his life are missing and unknown, and all those associations with terroists, criminals,2 anti American pastors, the Accorn voting fraud,he's been a memember of the American Socialist party at one point, and he was not even born here, but in Africa (there was even a law suit about this, he had a phony birth certificate-this is easy to find out about, go to obamacrimes.com) ect. ect. Wake up people! These ties do mattter! Sarah Palin gets criticised for spending too much on her wardrobe (which will be donated to charity when campaign is over)when he gets a free pass for everything-where is the outrage at this, all you women's rights people? Apparently he can do no wrong! We have truly lost our way. If he gets in, America will no longer be the America I grew up in, the land I love, a democracy. No, I'm afraid it will be a socialist country. Will we ever learn? Socialism does not work- People want to come and live here for the freedoms we have-not another goverment run society. But maybe half this country wants it that way, I don't know. Please, just use common sense and do your research-watch out for lies, because the media loves this guy and is protecting him. Don't be duped-Vote with your head, not your emotions!

Sarah Palin gets criticised for spending too much on her wardrobe

I don't care how much she spends on clothes. I don't care how lovely or tacky the clothes are.

But I do care about a blatant violation of federal law.
