Quick Hits: One Day Left Edition

  • Over at the Politico, they've mentioned Congressman Earl Blumenauer as a potential Secretary of Transportation.

They've also mentioned John Kitzhaber as a potential nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Personally, I think he should be Surgeon General. HHS is just a mega-bureaucrat. The Surgeon General is supposed to be America's health advocate - talking to Americans about the greatest threats to their health... cigarettes, AIDS, obesity, etc. Seems to me, the greatest threat right now is our health insurance system - and Kitzhaber would be a great advocate for reform.

  • Over at the Swing State Project, they've got an excellent map of election-night poll closing times (click to zoom) along with a spreadsheet of races to watch.

  • Wow. John McCain is already losing his 2010 re-election race to Governor Janet Napolitano, by a margin of 53-45.

  • Over in Bend, Republican Chuck Burley's voting record - or lack thereof - has become an issue in the campaign for HD 54.

  • Yeah, this YouTube makes me happy.

McCain's farewell tour. New Hampshire, Tenn., why not Oregon? Both he and Palin are returning to their home states. If they were closing anywhere, they would be on the hunt in one of the toss-ups.

the Bus got back last night from a "Magical Mystery Tour" weekend that included one more time for Judy — our 3rd trip to Bend to fight for her. she's a great person (all the folks we met in Bend this year were wonderful; thanks Laurie!) and we can only hope the combination of hard work and terrific candidate will pay off. Bend needs this upgrade!

The Surgeon General just talks, but the HHS secretary has incredible power. Mega-bureaucrat is right, managing thousands of employees, hundreds of federal health clinics, and billions upon billions of dollars in federal resources. If Kitzhaber wants to enact real reforms, HHS Secretary is where it's at.

Not that I think Kitz could stomach it, but he'd be a fool to pass it up.
