Governor Vetos Tax Subsidy for Electric Car Manufacturing

Chuck Sheketoff

Today, the Governor issued a veto of HB 2472, which among other things created a tax subsidy for electric vehicle manufacturing.

Read the press release here and veto letter here (PDF).

I was hoping he'd reTHINK his veto threat. Time will tell whether the Oregon Department of Energy will be able to better manage the runaway program and whether they can produce a meaningful analysis of the program. Their track record has not been very good.

Today the Governor also vetoed HB 2940, a rollback of the state's Renewable Energy Standard. Kudos to him for standing up to a really bad bill.

    Good,

We need to put our resources into hydrogen technology. Split the water molecule efficiently and you have clean fuel forever. Just ask the plant, flower and tree right next to you what I mean.

Thanks for sharing... I can't wait to get a electric car myself...

We're just waiting for a few more to get on the market and it will be time to replace our Honda... I'm hoping that the volt will be a good choice or the prius... the rebates are definitely a great step in putting more people in these cars.

If just saw this today as well (government rebates for hybrid cars - http://www.hybridmile.com/news/government-rebate-hybrid/) I hope that these get extended into 2010 and really they should be available till every single gas car is off the road.

The governor’s overall scheming, distorted, socialistic and flawed policies to excessively tax one segment or activity of the population to provide subsidies and frills to another group of people or businesses demonstrate he is more concerned about creating a legacy for himself rather than he is the economic health and stability of Oregonians, and the financial self sustainability of businesses in Oregon.

HB 2472 presented Governor Kulongoski with a tough choice. The bill would have made electric car manufacturing projects eligible for the BETC program - but at the same time it would have dramatically scaled back the cap for BETC renewable energy projects. I don't believe the Governor could have supported this bill and uphold his commitment to bringing green jobs to our state. It would have been like telling your child you'll pay for her first semester's textbooks to give her a good start in college, but that means you're slashing help with tuition by more than half! Congratulations to Governor Kulongoski for vetoeing not only this bill, but a rollback to Oregon's Renewable Portfolio Standard - and too bad he's not getting more support from the progressive community.
