Hump Day Happenings: House, Senate and stinking it up in Roseburg

Carla Axtman

The saga of Jim Weidner (R-McMinnville) in House District 24 is getting suckier..for Weidner. After a lame attempt to label being stripped of committees as a partisan political stunt, the Newberg Graphic has had enough:

Weidner claims Hunt was motivated by partisan politics and that the tax increases would hurt residents in a down economy. To the contrary, officials have said the transportation package will create hundreds of jobs and give a needed boost to the Oregon economy.

We have seen this pattern before from the conservative delegation currently representing Yamhill County: give the appearance of working toward consensus on important issues, then pull support at the last minute to appeal to their party and their supporters. It is disingenuous, it thwarts addressing important issues and it does nothing to improve the beleaguered image of legislators among the majority of voters.

In today's "Way To Keep It Classy" segment, vandals in Roseburg spattered feces on a window in front of a life-sized cutout of President Obama.

Today in Salem, Chip Shields was sworn in as the new Senator for District 22. From the Senate President's press release:

Shields

“In the House, Chip Shields has been a relentless advocate for working families and the underserved. He has the determination of a bulldog and a big heart for those who struggle in their everyday lives. He has a bright future in the Senate,” Senate President Peter Courtney said.

I kinda thought John Perry at Newsmax getting all warm and fuzzy about a US military coup was kinda stinky too.

The key line in the KVAL story about the feces attack in Roseburg:

"Police told KPIC News they don't believe the vandalism is politically motivated."

So the motive is race? Does that mean police are investigating a hate crime?

I'm with you on the Perry thing, MP. With calls for seccession and armed insurrection, it feels like the Right has fallen into a 60's time warp - the 1860's!

Heard Chris Garrett was stripped of his Health Committee assignment.

Chris Garrett didn't get stripped of the Health Care Committee; he got promoted to the Rules Committee. Good sleuthing, jackass.

What I heard was that Garrett disclosed a conflict of interest with the Health Committee and leadership decided to make the switch.

Let me assure you that Rep. Chris Garrett did NOT have a health care conflict, but rather his expertise was needed (and he wanted to serve) on the powerful House Rules Committee.

Chris will serve well on Rules, and his seat on the House Health Care Committee will be capably filled by new Rep. Val Hoyle!

    Carla:

While you may think its funny to see the political action down here in Douglas County on the tube I don't. But at least they threw shit and not lead. I was a candidate last year in the primary for the 7th house seat held by Hanna. I had the pleasure of meeting a person in Drain while I was in a booth handing out Democratic literature. He was obviously from the gun toting racist crowd down here and approached me with the statement "You know I have the right to kill you!" I kind of froze for a second and then watched his hands. I didn't know whether or not he was armed, a lot of people have CCP's down here. My opponent Don Norden was there and witnessed this. He engaged the individual in discussion, I drifted to the back of the tent and kept watching his hands. Later at Democratic picnic in Scottsburg I brought up the matter with our County DA Rick Wiesenburg and lodged a complaint. He called me and said he'd follow up with the Sheriff's Office. I'm still waiting for an answer about this from the DA, and/or the Sheriff but I don't think I'll get one now. Makes you think twice about being a minority party candidate (at least in this county).

Wow, no stereotyping or bigotry going on in that statement, huh?

You might want to reset your moral compass before seeking to represent any citizens of Oregon.

When a President has never proven he's legally President and plans to create a new army of ACORN people armed as well as the military, what's the military going to do? Dems who knowingly covered up his birth facts will be brought up on treason charges . mark my words

Dude..seriously...this is nuts. I'm asking you nicely now to please go back to topic if you comment again. This birther/deather/ACORN BS is just not relevant on this thread.

    Or even relevant to reality.

I'm from Roseburg and am not one to defend the people on the extreme right who live there (including my family members), but I think the News Review had a more complete story about the feces incident, including quotes from local Republicans condemning it. It seems that there have been more incidents of vandalism in the downtown area, including with feces (as KVAL mentioned), and vandalism of the Republican offices as well. I'm not defending the action, of course, but as a liberal who came out of Douglas County, I do like a little balance in discussion of my hometown.

I've updated the link to include the News-Review article you cited. It looks like they updated the piece they'd posted from yesterday.

    To Bucman Res:

When a person approaches you and uses the N word and threatens you by saying he has the right to kill you what would you do?

I don't particularly think my remark was bigoted since he declared where he was coming from. Maybe the Supreme Court will straighten out the issue but I doubt it will favor safety and the rights of citizens.

When a person approaches you and uses the N word and threatens you by saying he has the right to kill you what would you do?

Don’t let a word, even one as hateful as “nigger”, have that kind of command over you. As we are taught from childhood, words can’t hurt you.

Next time someone threatens your life do your civic duty and have them arrested. The last time I checked it was a crime. That is unless you believe the police are part of the “gun toting racist crowd” down there.
