Meterologist Dave Salesky is awesome.

Next time I fly, I'll be especially happy if KATU Meteorologist Dave Salesky is on board.

KATU meteorologist Dave Salesky makes successful landing when plane loses power

Authorities confirmed today that the pilot of a plane that made an emergency landing on Sauvie Island Sunday was KATU's chief meteorologist, Dave Salesky.

Salesky's single engine plane lost power on approach to Scappoose Airport shortly after noon, said Lt. Mary Lindstrand, spokeswoman for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office. The plane landed safely in a wheat field on the north part of the island.

Seriously awesome.

He's a better pilot than he is a weatherman: Boz he is not.

He truly is a great man. We are so blessed with our community leaders in Portland! That explains how KATU is able to keep us so well informed. I guess you have to know a lot to be a meteorologist. Can we be far off Eastern Europe, where a wrong forecast can mean people with lung diseases dying from the air quality? I'll bet they don't do that "what have you got on tap for us" banter tho. It's kinda funny to imagine, "So, Dave, what do you have for us this week-end. Well, Nataly, we're going to have a temperature inversion, and I'm afraid about 70 seniors will probably die".

"Vote DP; It's easier than thinking!"

Wow, "Rudy", you connected a great small plane emergency landing with Eastern European pollution, and that to "unthinking" support for the "DP"?

I was not at all aware that the "DP" was responsible for former Soviet Satellite states burning excessive amounts of brown coal. Maybe you can explain precisely how it is.

Great skills. A dead stick landing of a single engine aircraft w/out injuries is awesome.

    Loved the film clip!

As a fellow owner/pilot of a light aircraft I am happy to hear that Dave landed his Aeronca safely. It's OK to bend metal as long as we don't bend people!

UPDATE: He didn't even bend the plane: On a radio interview with Dave Tuesday morning he said after roughness he pulled carb heat and after a while the engine quit. He was high enough to report it to ATC Tracon (PDX Tower) and then call back and cancel the search when he landed. Drained fuel, ran engine for five minute tests, and with authority OK took off and flew back to his hangar. Carb Ice being his diagnosis. He said the landing was better than at many airports he has flown into! He did comment about it being a local media frenzy considering his job. Guess he is on the other side of the media this time! Glad it all went well as opposed to the first report of the "Airplane Crash on Sauvie Island."
