Poll: 66/67 popular with Oregonians; it's all GOTV now

Carla Axtman

Jeff Mapes:

Supporters of the tax measures on the Jan. 26 ballot are close to cinching the deal with voters, according to a new survey from Portland pollster Tim Hibbitts that was conducted for the Portland Tribune, Fox 12 and Oregon Public Broadcasting.

Measure 66, which increases income taxes on higher-income Oregonians, is supported by 52 percent with 39 percent opposed. Another 9 percent are undecided.

On Measure 67, which raises corporate income taxes, 50 percent are in favor and 40 percent are opposed. Another 10 percent are undecided.

Hibbitts has long been the most respected independent pollster in Oregon. It should be noted that he did do some polling work during the legislative session for business groups opposed to the tax package that eventually wound up on the ballot.

Hibbitts put it this way to the Portland Tribune:

“The ‘yes’ side is in a position to win these, but they have not closed the deal yet,” Hibbitts says. “All things being equal, I think these things are probably going to pass.

What in the world just happened? I was reading a great post, "Oregonian crosses the line" and was just going to post it at Eschaton since Atrios is very interested in the media stuff and it disappeared! Anyway, thanks for your post, Carla.

Rebublicans statewide are making a massive push on the 26th of January via phone banks with automatic dialers and the latest technology provided by the National Republican Party. No on 66/67 door hangers are appearing statewide in targeted precincts that vote mostly R. I live in one of those precincts. The door hanger arrived at 7 am on MLK day. This election is far from over. Vote YES!

Hey Paulie, will your business taxes go up, $10-150? Just wondering.

What good would it do to have a massive push on the 26th. If they want to be effective they should do it now. I don't think this is true.

Goes to show you exactly how much influence the Oregonian has in this state anymore. Talk about falling off a cliff...20 years ago, they were a real force in shaping public sentiment. Guess that's what you get when you sidestep into the Internet for fear of losing daily subscribers to the print edition. The rural voters generally still think the Oregonian is just a liberal Portland rag, and most Portlanders would rather pick up a free WWeek or Mercury anyway.

@paulie: That seems pretty strange that they'd wait till the last minute. After all, Republicans don't generally rely on the sort of voter that waits till the last minute to vote. I can't really imagine a lot of elderly or disgruntled CEOs making last second dashes to the post office on the 26th.

    Hey Ralph,

I'm not Paulie, but if it really matters to you I am a principal and co-manager of an Oregon C-corp with annual revenues well in excess of the minimum required for a tax increase. Though I can think of plenty of things I could do with the money I'll be paying in taxes, by my calculations my business, and my family, would be much worse off if Measures 66 & 67 fail than if I kept the money. I have already voted yes and have signs up in my business windows urging business owners in my neighborhood to do the same.

    Darth and Zull,

Nice article by Mapes in the "O" announcing the big phone banking operation by the National Republican Party in Oregon to defeat Measures 66/67. The Oregon Republican Party is already bragging it is the same operation they used to help Scott Brown win the MA senate seat.

Yeah, Paulie. When did the yes folks start their phone book and when did Tiernan start his?

And everyone in this state is going to forget Tiernan's earlier life as a legislator and co-sponsor of a Sizemore measure?
