Filing Day: All the news that's fit to break

Kari Chisholm FacebookTwitterWebsite

OK, rather than overwhelm the site with a gazillion posts, we'll be updating filing day news here.

Let's kick it off with a big one:

9:50 a.m.: Former State Treasurer Jim Hill has filed to run for his old job. He was first elected State Treasurer in 1992 and served two terms. He ran unsuccessfully for Governor in 2002 and 2006. Hat tip to Willamette Week.

10:10 a.m.: Former state legislator Margaret Carter has filed for Multnomah County Chair.

10:18 a.m.: UCC Minister Chuck Currie has filed to replace Jeff Cogen in the Multnomah County Commission Seat, District #2.

10:22 a.m.: Former Multnomah County Commissioner Gary Hansen says he’ll run to replace Commissioner Jeff Cogen. (via Willamette Week)

10:35 a.m.: Congressman Peter DeFazio has drawn a new Republican opponent (now that Sid Leiken is out.) Art Robinson is the director of the Petition Project - a project that seeks to line up scientists who are "opposed to the hypothesis of human-caused global warming." He's also a home-schooling activist. Here's a 2001 profile from right-wing magazine American Spectator. (Filing here.)

10:47 a.m.: Richard Harisay, a Democrat, has filed to run in Oregon House District 17. That seat is currently held by Republican Sherrie Springer.

10:56 a.m.: Jeff Cogen has now officially withdrawn his filing for his District #2 Commission seat and has filed for MultCo Chair.

11:22 a.m.: This one is from yesterday, but I hadn't seen it reported elsewhere. Another GOPer has filed for Governor. West Linn resident and business owner Darren Karr has waded into the race. Karr already has a website in which he calls himself the Zero Dollar Candidate.

12:13 p.m.: Gary Hansen's filing is now official for MultCo Commish District #2.

1:57 p.m.: Hey, check this out! You can follow Multnomah County Elections on Facebook - and get live updates on all the filings.

2:06 p.m.: According to WW, Paul Van Orden will file to run for the District 2 Multnomah County Commission race. Paul is the noise control officer for the city of Portland, and picked up 10% of the county-wide vote for Sheriff in 2006 as a write-in candidate.

2:30 p.m.A few more filings for the State Legislature: Republican Kayla Fioravanti has filed to run against Democrat Mike Schauffler in House District 48. Democrat Mike Powers has filed in House District 20 against Vicki Berger--Powers is a member of SEIU and is set to give Berger a real run. On the Senate side, GOPer Karen Bodner is filing in the 7th district against Chris Edwards.

3:04 p.m. Democrat Rick Levine, a former president of Rogue Community College, has filed to run against Rep. Dennis Richardson (R-Central Point) in the 4th.

3:40 p.m. Timi Parker a retired teacher from Newberg has filed against Larry George. I'm hearing that race may turn out to be a hot one. Susan Sokol-Blosser has pulled the trigger against Jim Weidner (sweet!) in House District 24.

3:50 p.m. Paul Van Orden makes it official for MultCo Commissioner #2.

4:00 p.m.: Another race to keep an eye on: Pete Wells, the City Attorney of Pendleton, has filed to run in the seat currently held by Republican Bob Jenson. Jenson is facing a potentially bruising primary against Michael Mathisen of Hermiston.

4:09 p.m.: Ted Wheeler and Chris Telfer have officially filed for state treasurer.

5:34 p.m.: Multnomah County just updated their filings - and there are FIVE more candidates for District 2: Tom Markgraf, Roberta Phillip, Enrique Arias, Irma Linda Castillo, and Maria Rubio. Phew. ... Oops! Missed one: Loretta Smith, for a total of TEN candidates.

As a lawyer who represents criminal defendants, civil plaintiffs, and tenants, I am hoping we don't get any last-minute ideological stealth candidates filing for judge. Oregon should abolish judicial elections. The federal system is a much better model.

Stephen: Is there an online resource at the county for that filing? I've looked at the YamCo Clerk's office and can't find it.

    Carla,

The Leg is a state office so it's here: https://secure.sos.state.or.us/eim/CFSearchPage.do

Thank you so much, Carla and Kari! This is really helpful.

The zero dollar candidate vows to "Refuse to be part of a political party or any other organization that may influence our duty to fellow Americans" so how is Karr running as a Republican?

  • (Show?)

Guess he figures that the Republican Party is not an "organization that may influence our duty to fellow Americans."

    Just sayin'.

Jack Lort's yesterday wrote about Will Boettner running in Dist 59. I see that another Eastern Oregon D has filed for a state house seat. Pete Wells, Pendelton City Attorney and Umatilla Democratic Party chair, is running for HD 57, held by Bob Jenson. GOP chair Bob Tiernan has, of course, has been trashing Jenson and Smith for their support of the tax increases and urging conservative challengers. I don't know if any Rs have filed against them. Does anyone out there know?

    Here is Pete's press release:

Pete Wells Files for Democratic Nomination for Oregon House District 58

On Monday, March 8, Peter H. Wells of Pendleton, filed with the Secretary of State's office to be a Democratic candidate to serve in the Oregon House of Representative from House District 58.

House District 58 includes most of the population Umatilla County and a small sliver of Union County. Ten of Umatilla county's twelve cities are in the district as is the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

The district is now represented by Representative Bob Jenson. Mr. Wells stated: “Representative Jenson has represented the district well since 1997. However the state Republican Party leadership does not honor the thoughtful stance of Representative Jenson. If the party chooses to replace Representative Jenson as the party's nominee, it is important that the Democratic Party have a candidate that can continue to represent all of the district. If Representative Jenson is selected as the nominee from the Republican Party, I look forward to a fair discussion with Representative Jenson on those issues to which we bring different approaches.”

Mr. Wells is Pendleton City Attorney. He has served as Umatilla County counsel, budget officer, and data processing manager; loan servicing manager for Western Heritage Savings and Loan; in private law practice and, before law school at University of Oregon School of Law, nine years in computer businesses. Mr. Wells was recognized for his community service by the Pendleton Chamber of Commerce with its First Citizen award in 1997.

Mr. Wells has a wife, ElRae, and four adult children, Ray and Mary Sara by birth, and Andrea and Toni, by circumstance. Pete and ElRae Wells have five grandchildren.

    Good

lost in everything that's going on is the slight detail that the Mult Co Board has to appoint an interim Chair. we can assume they won't appoint one of the candidates. this might be a good spot for Bev Stein. she wouldn't have the political pressures and could bring the benefit of her years in the Chair, and her subsequent work, to help the County get thru the rest of the year with minimal disruption.

We Jim Hill in the race I'd say the Teddys are way out on a limb with this one-

"we can assume they won't appoint one of the candidates." I agree that they ought to appoint someone who is not a candidate, given the whole picture, but I wouldn't assume anything.

Re: District 58, so far (as of about noon) Michael Mathison had filed to run against Bob Jenson in the R Primary. He works for the Department of Corrections at Two Rivers.

Paul Van Orden is a really dedicated public servant who knows, and thinks, a lot about how government can run better. He does a great job as the noise control officer for Portland. People should take his campaign very seriously.

(Full disclosure: Paul is married to the main private investigator for my law office.)

HD 39- rematch of Toby Forsberg (D) and Bill Kennemer (R).

Toby lost by less than 500 votes last time. Let's see if we can win it.

I said it on the WWeek page and I'll say it here... Jim Hill was an outstanding Democratic State Treasurer the first time around. There is little doubt that he would provide a steady hand at the wheel during the current crisis.

Looks like Bernie Meyer filed for Mult County Sheriff today. His filing claims he has served as an acting police chief, patrol supervisor, and was/is? on the east county major crimes team. The sheriff race could become interesting.

I was a strong supporter of Ted Wheeler. Now I’m just a supporter. I am disappointed because I thought Ted was going to be a thoughtful caretaker of the Treasurer’s office until the good citizens of Oregon elected a Treasurer in November. With him now filling for election, he becomes just an appointed incumbent running for re-election. A real nice incumbent with what I feel is an unfair advantage.

You missed one for Multnomah Co. #2.

Loretta Smith, Wyden's veteran staffer, has apparently decided to flex her electoral muscles.

She should make a compelling candidate in such a crowded field.

Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Luke: "please tell me that some one really strong has filed to run against Matt Wingard"

Sandy Webb's running. She's a lawyer and probably the smartest person who has run for the HD 26 seat in decades. If anyone can beat Wingard, she's the most likely. Send money.
