The Arkansas Option
Steve Novick
Do you think all the options on your Oregon primary ballot are pretty good? Do you find that mildly disappointing, making you wish you had something to get riled up about? Then take a side trip to Arkansas, which also has its primary tomorrow. Bill Halter is on the verge of, at a minimum, forcing Blanche Lambert Lincoln - slayer of the public option; opponent of global warming legislation; supporter of the Bush tax cuts; uncritical friend of the oil industry; supporter of the Iraq war - into a runoff. Please join me in going to Halter's web site and sending him a few bucks.

This post is the epitome of what is wrong with politics. What business does Steve have in interfering with Arkansas politics.
If you can't vote in Arkansas, you shouldn't be able to give money there. (Nothing personal Steve, you just happened to write the article)

Took the words out of my mouth. I'm shocked. I've always respected Steve. Lay your cards on the table, then. Do you believe the ends justify the means?
Excuse me. I have to go break some things.

Okay, okay, I'm eating lunch so I'll be the one to respond.
Decisions made in the United States Senate affect the lives and livelihoods of every single citizen of the United States. Therefore, Steve is fully vindicated in supporting a candidate he believes will better serve the long-term interest of this nation, despite not being able to vote for him.
By your logic, because I live in Multnomah County District 1, I should have been forbidden from canvassing for Chuck Currie this weekend in District 2?

And what we do doesn't affect the fortunes of the Saudi royals? Guess they're right to be buying votes in the US!
Did you canvass there, or where you vote? Move to Arkansas, go door to door for that race, and we'll talk.

And foreign officials are prohibited by law from giving money to candidates here.
If I had my way, we would all be prohibited from putting money into political campaigns, but until we change that, Steve remains justified in supporting someone who he feels will best serve the long-term interests of the nation.
What wasn't clear about where I canvassed?

It was clear. That was my point. You may not live there, but you had feet on the ground and were meeting people, which is much different than finding a website and writing a check, imho.

"If you can't vote in Arkansas, you shouldn't be able to give money there. "
So Wellpoint and HCA can vote in Arkansas?

How can you like this? What does it mean? Mr. P. said, "that is what is wrong with the system". Does that say they don't influence Arkansas politics? That they can vote in Arkansas? What is your point?

No corporation SHOULD be able to give money to the political process!

It will be huge if Halter wins. Blanche Lincoln has been a pain for a long time. I'm much more interested in that than our Statewide races (partly because there isn't too many villains or progressive champions in competitive races)

I'll take it that silence gives assent and that Mr. Novick rejects our notions as not worth responding to. Helps calibrate the radar.
