Al Gore cleared by Multnomah County DA

Al Gore has been cleared of all charges related to the accusation of sexual assault in Portland hotel in 2006.

From ABC News:

Senior Deputy District Attorney Don Rees, in a memo to the D.A., Michael D. Schrunk, wrote that Hagerty gave no indication afterwards that she was upset, as she later claimed.

Rees noted that Hagerty sold her story to the National Enquirer, failed a polygraph test, thanked the hotel management two days after the alleged incident for sending business her way and "has not provided as repeatedly requested medical records she claims are related to the case."

Rees concludes, "This case is not appropriate for criminal prosecution. The matter is closed and the investigative materials will be returned to PPB [the Portland Police Bureau]."

Gore's spokeswoman, Kalee Kreider, issued a statement: "Mr. Gore unequivocally and emphatically denied this accusation when he first learned of its existence three years ago. He respects and appreciates the thorough and professional work of the Portland authorities and is pleased that this matter has now been resolved."

It's good to see this rather unfortunate saga come to a close.

Update: Willamette Week has posted the DA's memo in its entirety.

I'm sure we can thank Ms. Hagerty for relieving the county of resources and funds, of which the county has so much of just laying around these days, in having to investigate this obviously bogus claim of assault.

Considering the timing of the various announcements, it may have been what caused Al and Tipper to separate.

    That would be really awful.

I never met Al, but I met Tipper when she was doing a tour for her book pushing lyric warnings. It wasn't the best day of her life. I was apparently the only person in the whole mall that knew she was "somebody." Tipper. Table. Books. and now 22-23 yr. old me. Talked to her about 10 min. Bought a copy of her book for my mom.

She could have been anybody's mom in my neighborhood then. Regular folks.

Molly Hagerty needs psychiatric help. I hope she gets it. (I'm trying very hard to be charitable, but of course as a woman I am irritated that this could cast suspicions on any woman who TRULY is a victim of a sexual assault by a powerful man.)

I am sorry that Al Gore had to go through this.

As a point of clarification, Al Gore was not cleared of charges. The DA chose did not pursue the matter further. Otherwise, Gore would have been charged and the case would have gone to a grand jury for an indictment. Only a grand jury can clear a person of charges brought by a DA.
