Bill Bradbury and Cameron Diaz

Cameron_diazFrom the Oregonian's "people" column:

[Cameron Diaz is] going global, becoming one of former Vice President Al Gore's climate warriors. She and 200 other business leaders, environmentalists, scientists and luminaries spent two days in Nashville last week getting tips from Gore on how to make the case for action against global warming. Her mentor in the project? Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury.

Meanwhile:

Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz are officially kaput. The duo -- dating since 2003 -- have confirmed their split in a joint statement that said the usual stuff. You know: "We have, in fact, ended our romantic relationship, and have done so mutually and as friends, with continued love and respect for one another." The two said they usually prefer not to comment on their relationship, but recent speculation and inaccuracies prompted them to issue the statement.

Oh Bill... you dog!

I'm not sure what "mentor" means in this context. This is the Oregonian "reporting" and there color commentators/reporters generally can't find or report the truth in a story even if it is tattoed on their own hand and someone raised that hand in front of their face.

However, I'm sure that got they got the general sense right, and so the real question is why too many NW and Oregon elected officials like Bradbury all-too-frequently come across as such clowns on the national stage (and I don't mean in the Photoshop'ed picture, I mean in his role in this)?

  • (Show?)

PL -- what do you mean, "clown"? Gore's program is to find well-known people - electeds, activists, celebs - to learn how to do his global warming slideshow. The first class included Bill Bradbury. The second class included Cameron Diaz. In the second class, they assigned each participant a mentor who was in the first class. What's the big deal?

I'm going to stop posting funny shit if you people are going to keep taking it so damn seriously.

I don't know much about Bill Bradbury or Diaz, so nothing serious from me. I guess what's funny, is I didn't think the picture was photoshopped! hah!

  • (Show?)

Yes, and leave it to me to chime in on the important stuff. Clearly a fun photoshopped photo, which appears to be from a Rotary meeting (the bell on the podium).

Kari, don't get me wrong, I do think this is very funny - both the picture and how NW/Oregon politicians like Bradbury really are not taken very seriously on the national stage (as much as we here really, really want to believe the people we elect are important leaders) - so I do hope you'll keep posting.

What I find not so funny is, based on the reviews of the scientific evidence I've read, that human-caused global climate change most certainly is a fact. Unfortunately, what I also find not that so funny is that his solicitiously pop culture "friendly" efforts to increase public awareness are aptly described as a sideshow, and may turn out to be counterproductive.

  • (Show?)

Whose efforts--Gore's? It's not a sideshow, it's a pyramid scheme to disseminate information quickly. It's a brilliant idea to spread the news like a virus, across different walks of life and parts of the country.

Wince all you want--Oregon is not recognized as a sideshow on global warming; they're recognized as a potential world leader of industries and policies designed to combat global warming. This state, particularly I-5 from Eugene to Portland, is on the verge of being ground central for a multibillion dollar greentech surge. We're naturally suited; here's just one example: people are very excited about the potential in ocean wave electricity generation. What's the only state in the country that owns 100% of the land that its waves crash onto? Bingo.

Laugh all you want, but Cameron Diaz is filthy rich and has a lot of filthy rich friends who love buying and doing things that make them feel deep, and she's going to be telling all her friends that this guy in Oregon taught her how to do Al Gore's speech, and how the next big thing in hip/conscious business opportunities is happening up there. That's nothing but good for this state...and I hate Cameron Diaz. We're already taking some of Cali's movie business away; I don't mind stealing some of their engineering entrepreneurs, either.

the only issue i have w/this kind of hoopla is the fact that these wealthy types, with their huge homes, multiple cars and other grossly irresponsible consumption habits are talking so seriously about an issue, wishing to spread information to the rest of us while they fail to see their own huge contribution to global warming.

Hotties like Cameron Diaz are directly responsible for all the Global Warming. Put 'em in burqas and world temperatures will drop dramaticly.

how NW/Oregon politicians like Bradbury really are not taken very seriously on the national stage

Disagreed. Bradbury, in particular, is leading a national effort to expand vote-by-mail. From his Washington Post editorial to this summer's conference of the National Association of Secretaries of State - here in Portland. He's taken quite seriously.

  • (Show?)

And just to add to Kari's comment:

Bill Bradbury was elected by the Democratic Secretaries of State association to serve as one of their two delegates to the DNC.

Kate Brown was elected by the organization for Democratic state legislators to serve as one of their two delegates to the DNC.

The respect these two Oregon politicians get from their peers gives Oregon an extra two votes on the DNC.

Note: I probably have the names of these associations wrong.

Wyden is way out front on healthcare. Blumenauer is The Man when it comes to urban livability issues.

I think we're doing OK on the national stage.

    I'm still laughing.

In particular at Jennifer Greenleaf's apparent belief that the DNC, much less Democratic Secretaries of State counts for anything in the public's mind, that Wyden's healthcare plan is viewed as much of anything but a stunt and a giveaway to the health insurance industry, and that Blumenauer is regarded as much more than another one of those loopy NW/Oregon Congress guys who used to wear that dumb bowtie. How many times to you see either of these three guys quoted in the national press or any of the political media communications channels that create the environment in which most of the rest of the country, including the well-informed, bases their political opinions? You hardly even see these guys on CSPAN, except when the subject is an issue, and presented in a way, that leaves most of the rest of the people of the country scratching their heads.

Still laughing also at torridjoe who seems to not have the vaguest clue that getting people on the bandwagon for something, using little more than the marketing tools of popular culture, does not lay the foundations for real and lasting political change. Gore seems to have descended to the level of the dilettante. It is kind of sad to witness since I voted for him, and I was active in contacting NW elected officials that they demand that all votes be counted in FL (Jennifer, where was Wyden in January 2001 on backing that challenge by the House Black Caucus to certification of the vote?) It seems that Gore is still seems to be somewhat grounded, or we might have to worry about him adopting the tactics of the demagogue.

    You guys are a hoot.

  • (Show?)

why, exactly, doesn't it lay the foundation for real and lasting political change? It's already caused one state to give up on the feds and devise their own environmental plan--and that was with a Republican governor.
