The Oregonian slams Smith's war "contortions"

Gordo7From today's Oregonian:

This is a real challenge, writing about U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith's views on the war in Iraq.

Because he's been here, there, everywhere on the war, on a Senate resolution opposing President Bush's troop escalation, even on the question of debating the issue in the Senate. Of course, Smith is far from alone in being confused and conflicted about the war, and about the best next course of action for the United States in Iraq.

Smith represents the people of Oregon. And he owes his constituents a better and fuller explanation than he has given so far of his shifting views on the war and the role he intends to play among a group of Republican senators who have challenged President Bush's plan to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq.

    Sounds to me like the Oregonian is still partially defending Smith, but at the same time asking him to address the fact that he has contradicted himself. It's a good start for the Oregonian to at least acknowledge that Smith's position is merky at best.

    I've heard about the Smith ad's, but I haven't seen them. Have the actually started aring them yet. If so, does anyone know where I can watch it online?

    Oh what a hard hitting editorial...cough, cough, choke....

    Standard Oregonian editorial. The conclusion doesn't fit the premise of the preceeding words. The editorial ends with;

    "But if MoveOn.org and liberal groups are already obsessed with the next election, most Oregonians want nothing more than to understand their senator's position on the war and the troop buildup. At the next opportunity, Gordon Smith needs to explain himself on Iraq."

    Nooo...Oregonians want Smith to help end the war, not just explain himself.

    Kudos to whichever of the BO editors who added the link!

    Who wants to bet that The Oregonian will endorse Smith, no matter who the Dems nominate?

But an Oregonian endorsement could be great news!
