New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine Badly Injured in Crash

From the Star-Ledger:

The duration and distance were short, but in those dizzying seconds and feet, Gov. Jon Corzine suffered injuries serious enough to land him in intensive care with a breathing tube down his throat and a doctor declaring him lucky to be alive.

The 60-year-old governor underwent about two hours of surgery last night to repair multiple broken bones, including 12 ribs and a femur that protruded through the skin of his thigh, following a car accident on the Garden State Parkway in Galloway Township.

State Police this morning said they are still seeking the driver of a red pickup truck believed to have caused the accident.

With two of his adult children by his bedside, Corzine, sedated and on intravenous painkillers, remains in intensive care in Cooper University Hospital in Camden. He required seven pints of blood, officials said, and is using a breathing tube to ease his respiration with the broken ribs, and a broken breastbone.

Corzine spokesman Anthony Coley said the governor did not appear to have suffered brain or spinal cord damage.

We wish Gov. Corzine a full and complete recovery and return to good health.

An early newscast this morning reported the governor was not wearing a seat belt.

Not wearing a seat belt can get you killed, especially in an SUV. People don't seem to realize seat belt laws were enacted for a very good reason.

Corzine's communications director just admitted at a press conference "It does not appear the Governor was wearing a seat belt". He's lucky to be alive.

Ok...so I wish the Gov good luck. This is from the A.P. wire

"Senate President Richard Codey became acting governor Thursday evening after being notified by fax from Corzine's office that the governor had been injured."

They notified him by fax? WTF?

Garrett, that's almost surely a formality that came after a personal call. The official transfer of power probably has to happen in writing.

I read somewhere last night that the Governor famously didn't wear seat belts - and that had been a source of some disagreement with his staff.

Even odder: This makes him the third Governor of New Jersey in a row to break his leg in office.

I've known a few hard headed people that refused to wear seat belts. At some point, they find out their head isn't so hard after all. Buckling up should be an automatic reflex.

I'm not suprised about this accident. I have seen the Govener's motorcade three times now on the GSP. 3 or 4 black SUV's do 80+ mph, sometimes w/lights flashing. They don't seem to think they need to obey the law. People scurry to get out of the way. It wouldn't be unrealistic to believe they were the cause of the accident.

Egads. Any word of his recovery and long-term prgonisis?

I don't think the general public realizes how dangerous SUV's are when driven above 65mph. The center of mass is quite a bit higher and the tires are larger. They also weigh on average twice as much as a passenger car. They are prone to flipping and rolling due to these factors when driven at high speeds. If a driver makes the mistake of sharply turning the steering wheel to avoid an object, the front tire grips the road on its side edge and buckles under causing the rig to go into a deadly roll. Many drivers have been killed and paralyzed this way.

Maybe it would be wise to not let Governor Bill Richardson and Corzine drive together. Richardson has ordered his driver to speed up to 100 MPH and not pull over for any cops.

    Richardson sounds awesome!

From what I've seen, not wearing seat belts is quite common among many elected officials. Maybe this accident will change that.

I wish him a speedy recovery. Maybe once he's back up and about, he can do a commercial for the importance of wearing seat belts?

My husband drives me crazy because he hates wearing his seat belt. Our daughter gets after him until he puts it on (she's 5).
