Bill Clinton in Portland

Today, Bill Clinton appeared twice in Portland in support of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. He spoke at OHSU.

KGW has extended video available - part one, part two, part three, and their own coverage.

The Oregonian reports:

When he started to speak at OHSU this morning, the former president talked about Hillary Clinton's plan for improving the economy and about health care.

He said that while the country as a whole has yet to experience a true recession, he pointed out that many households already have.

And while Oregon is doing better than the rest of the country, he said, "the America I know" has had falling disposable income in this decade. Median family income is now "a thousand dollars less than when I left office." Gains in this decade have gone mostly to the top 10 percent of income earners, he said.

His wife's position, Clinton said, is to produce wealth for all by increasing educational opportunities and creating new jobs." He said Oregon is a model for this type of economic model.

He then segued into economic independence being dependent on eliminating ties to oil dependency. He first drew applause with a reference to a 100-mile-per-gallon vehicle and said Hillary Clinton would introduce a $50 billion "strategic energy fund."

Creating simple, efficient standards is a simple, big-ticket way to improve the economy by reducing that dependence on energy use, he said. He prompted a chuckle when he said the mayor of Houston is committed to such a cause. "Yes, Houston" Clinton pointed out. And he wants to be more green than Portland and Seattle.

Discuss.

I lived in Houston for 5 years. Unless it's changed a lot since then, it's one of the most energy-wasteful cities I've ever seen. No sidewalks, no meaningful transit, unfettered sprawl. An energy-conscious planning policy in Houston would be a huge step forward.

  • (Show?)

Ugh. Don't even get me started on Houston. Their public transportation system is terrible. Metro (their bus/rail system) won't go out into the surrounding areas. They have a little rail system that doesn't go many places, but I guess is great if you're around the museum/zoo area. I used the bus when I was in Houston and it was awful.

Of course, the mayor of Houston is the former chair of the Texas Democratic Party. So it's no surprise that he'd be in favor of such a cause.

  • (Show?)

Of course, the mayor of Chicago has truly been in the forefront of green practices, but what's the use of courting Illinois folks?

Chris and Josh, what are your takes, respectively, on Hillary's remarks about being under sniper fire, etc. in Bosnia?

I understand that Bill Clinton lectured for over 2 hours in Medford and didn't take any questions. This is something that I think people are still looking for answers on. It is very puzzling.

I understand Hillary is coming to Portland this Saturday. Does anyone have any information on how to attend the event. Please email me or post here. I never heard anything from the local campaign team.

  • (Show?)

Nope. Most I've heard thus far is that she'll be in Portland and Eugene on Saturday. I'll keep watching the KATU and KGW sites for details, as they had the details on President Clinton's visit long before the official Clinton site did.

  • (Show?)

    Working on those details now.

i'd like to see Hillary. i'd like to ask her why she has yet to admit she was wrong wrong wrong to vote to authorize Bush & Cheney's invasion of Iraq? and then i'd like to ask her why, given the way she's run from that vote, i should trust her with my son's life when he goes over next year?

two simple questions. i think she owes America an answer.

As a veteran, her claims about Bosnia are particularly disconcerting to me. If she were in any immediate danger, or say UNDER SNIPER FIRE she would have no doubts about what happened in that situation. The details would be etched into her brain.

Of course there are times in battle when accounts vary, people have different perspectives and and may recall events differently.

This is entirely different. This isn't about how many shots were fired or where the gunfire came from, this simply didn't happen. At all.

Veterans as a group are very conscious about misrepresentation of their experiences. People might brag a little bit about the time they served but those who completely misrepresent the facts of their service for some kind of personal gain are rightly treated like outcasts by the veteran community. It shouldn't be any different for politicians.

A lot of the kids she helped send to Iraq could tell her quite a bit about their experiences under sniper fire.

They won't answer this because we all can see the truth.

    She lied.

TA, Don't you want to ask Obama about his vote on the war reso...er...wait. He wasn't even in the Senate so he never voted on it! Perhaps you'd like to ask him about some of this stuff? Probably not though, you only seem interested in holding Clinton accountable.

Obama on Iraq: Prior To Joining U.S. Senate While running for senate in 2003, Sen. Obama acknowledged that he took his anti-war speech off his campaign website, calling it 'dated.' Specifically, State Senator Obama maintains that an October 2002 anti-war speech was removed from his campaign web site because “the speech was dated once the formal phase of the war was over, and my staff's desire to continually provide fresh news clips." [Black Commentator, 6/19/03]

Obama in July 2004: 'There’s not much of a difference between my position and George Bush’s position [on Iraq] at this stage.' In a meeting with Chicago Tribune reporters at the Democratic National Convention, Obama said, “On Iraq, on paper, there's not as much difference, I think, between the Bush administration and a Kerry administration as there would have been a year ago. […] There's not much of a difference between my position and George Bush's position at this stage. The difference, in my mind, is who's in a position to execute.” [Chicago Tribune, 07/27/04]

Obama on 2002 Iraq resolution vote: 'What would I have done? I don't know:' "When asked about Senators Kerry and Edwards' votes on the Iraq war, Obama said, "I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports," Mr. Obama said. "What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made." [New York Times, 07/26/04]

In September 2004, Obama says he ' would be willing to send more soldiers to Iraq.' [AP, 9/19/04]

Obama on Iraq: U.S. Senate Record 11 months after joining Senate, Sen. Obama delivers first speech devoted to Iraq, says 'US forces are sill part of the solution.' "[T]he level of his criticism lowered when he arrived in Washington. In his first year in the Senate, he delivered one speech on Iraq, calling for a phased withdrawal by the end of 2006. But last November, Mr. Obama revised that time frame, saying the drawdown should begin in four to six months." Obama's Senate web site lists his address to the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations on November 22, 2005, 11 months after entering the U.S. Senate. Obama said, "I believe that U.S. forces are still a part of the solution in Iraq." [New York Times, 2/12/07; obama.senate.gov]

18 months after joining Senate, Sen. Obama gives first floor statement devoted to Iraq, opposes timeline for withdrawal. "…But having visited Iraq, I am also acutely aware that a precipitous withdrawal of our troops, driven by congressional edict rather than the realities on the ground, will not undo the mistakes made by this administration. It could compound them." [obama.senate.gov]

    Upon arriving in the Senate, Sen. Obama supported every funding bill for Iraq, some $300 billion….until he started running for President. [2005 Vote # 117, HR1268, 5/10/05; 2005 Vote # 326, S1042, 11/15/05; 2006 Vote # 112, HR4939, 5/4/06; 2006 Vote # 239; 2006 Vote # 186, S2766, 6/22/06; HR5631, 9/7/06]

If Hillary wants to answer the phone at three a.m. let's hear more about Bosnia. Not this sniper crap. How are you going to defend yourself in the fall when Mccain starts talking up how the Clintons allowed our friends in Iran to sell arms to Muslims in Bosnia? I am aware that this is a complicated situation, but since you were at you husband's elbow you should be well versed in what happened there. I was in Bosnia this passed summer and the remnants of the carnage are quite unsettling. I have been reading for the last several months trying to make heads or tells of what occurred there. With her experience the Senator should be able to write a book!

It simply amazes me always how the media's bias and control can dictate outcomes of elections. A candidate in the running such as Ron Paul has not one word mentioned by any of the media as if they actually fear the people really getting to know him and his views and solutions.

We need to also remember, Bill is not running for this position Hilary is and the two are not a married couple they are business partners. As for Obama if it were not for his very angry and racist wife he might be ok. Her in the white house scares me as much as Mc Cain and Hilary.
