The Oregonlive version of spadea

Carla Axtman

I'm presuming this is quite legal. But is it really ethical for a newspaper to have what looks like the equivalent to a giant headline (and no "paid advertisement" disclaimer unless you click through)?

The real question is whether this has been done before for other political ads or if this is the first time.

I was more than a little surprised that the Oregonian included the spadea again in today's paper after all the crap they took with it the last time and the universal response in the letters-to-the editor. It really is surprising that the publisher is going so heavily in opposition to his primary readership base to protect his personal tax postion. He also has a real conflict of interest that he has not discussed in the editorial copy.

Or maybe the publisher and Phil Knight are trying to save Jobs!

"Measures 66 and 67 should be labeled Oregon's Assisted Suicide Law II."

None of the other graphical ads are labeled as paid advertisements on the site.

Seriously, this is the same as what the "Yes" campaign did with the voter guide (except that was against the rules). They are doing everything they can within the rules and existing options to get their message out.

Plus, it is pretty normal for expandable ads to have teasers that don't tell you everything unless you click it. Fine by IAB standards.

Actually...what's more likely, Meg, is every single item on the progressive agenda IS NOT going to lead somehow to the end of civilization as we know it as you righties claim will happen as a result of an implementation of a progressive policy.

Is anyone doing a count on supposed apocalypse/end of civilization/everyone on the face of the Earth dying screaming impacts of progressive policies? How many times have the righties claimed the Earth would detonate if Progressives legislation passed.

How many times has it happened? ZERO. So what are the chances ANYTHING Meg is ranting here will actually happen if Measure 66 and 67 pass? ZERO

It's time to call the right wing bullshit, especially since Obama was elected, exactly what it is. BULLSHIT.

Meg's rant here is more of that same Bullshit, and doesn't deserve to be treated as legitimate point in a debate of public policy.

Wow Adam, lighten up drama queen. All Meg said was they are trying to save jobs and quoted Phil Knight. How did you read all that into it. Are you a protein deprived veggie?

I think I'll hit their ad as much as possible (cost per click must be pretty high to get that placement) to make them spend more $$$.

I've already voted 'yes' on both measures. :-)

    Hey Darth and meg:

What would the repubs know how job creation? Care to count how many jobs Bush lost in the last 8 years?

    Here, I'll get you two started: -1, -2, -3, -4 ...

When I cancelled my subscription today, the nice woman at the Oregonian's circulation desk specifically asked whether the advertising covering today's front page was the reason I was cancelling. (It was not the only reason- it was one of four reasons I gave, all essentially related to the spadea and/or the newspaper's presentation of Measures 66 and 67.)

I suspect the Oregonian had more than a few cancellations over the spadea.

Isn't blurring and slightly crossing the line the only reason traditional media have a web presence?

I suspect the Oregonian had more than a few cancellations over the spadea.

Somehow that strikes me as saying that a piece of paper burst into flames on account of the sun, without mentioning the magnifying glass in between... Kudos to the optics. Brickbats for the myopics.

FYI, all day, a BO story headlined "The Oregonian Crosses the Line" has appeared in my RSS reader, but doesn't appear on BO itself -- like it was posted briefly and pulled, or stored in draft and somehow got seen by the little RSS-bot or ? I came to check this story to see if it was the same one under a new title, but no, it's more on the fish wrapper.

I joined an apparent long list of folks who cancelled their subscription today...and when the woman asked me why...I told her it was apparent the Oregonian didn't care about school children anymore..and as a teacher...I didn't want my money going to a company that did business that way.

Turn in your ballots. Students, law enforcement, and our seniors are counting on you.

And, for those folks screaming these measures will result in job losses...I guess teachers and others don't really count when they lose jobs.

While we're on the subject, are you a shit eating Rushead? Must seem like drama when you only get worked up about paying your fair share and pulling the wings off of insects!

I haven't listened to Rush in years.

Do click on the online ad as much as possible. Those type of ads are NEVER paid for on a CPC basis. Graphic ads are almost always always paid for on a CPM (Cost per Thousand) impression basis.

These type of fixed ads are usually paid for on a flat fee basis (i.e. $X for a set period of time). I suspect this one is bundled with the print ad.

So all you are doing is jacking up the performance numbers that will justify the Oregonian's position that it is an effective advertising option.

Yeah, sorry, that was my rant, and it mostly rehashed Carla's excellent post of three days ago so I pulled it. There's really no way on a blog to indicate you've done that once you hit "post." Sorry for the syndicated readers out there.

I am having trouble understanding how Measures 66 & 67 kill jobs. I have a small business (Oregon C-corp, annual revenues sufficient to trigger tax increase) and this last Fall I added a full-time employee. (Actually elevated a student intern to full-time.) I made this decision to hire full-time based on sales volume (or, rather, lost sales). Most people I know make hiring (or layoff) decisions based on sales of products or services, not how much money they have in the bank after paying taxes. My expenses have all gone up this year (health care premiums alone up by 11%), and I will have to be creative about paying the extra costs. But I can't imagine laying off a productive, profitable employee in order to be better able to pay my expenses. That scenario makes no sense to me. Unless the "JKT" people think that somehow NIKE is going to whittle their staff down to the size of a $500K business to avoid their tax obligations, who cuts staff (and the attendant sales) to cut costs? Are there really many large companies keeping thousands of unproductive employees on staff? "We lose $XX per employee, but we make it up in volume." Like I say, the "JKT" line makes no sense to me.

I think we'd all appreciate it if you trimmed your screenshot next time. For christ's sake, are the two 'Share on Facebook' favorites necessary? At the very least you could click the 'Customize links' button to the right of the second one instead of spamming us with the 'Free Hotmail' and 'Windows Marketplace' bookmarks. If you get confused, I suggest checking the 'Getting Started' link. There's surely some useful information to be had there.

Castlerock: I deliberately left the whole top of the screen so that the URL would appear. Sorry if it offends your sensibilities.

I think you can overlook the "spam(?)" in order to have the whole picture.

That was the most honest way to present the story, IMO.
