Working against tax fairness doesn't pay: Lobbyist Mark Nelson sheds another client

Carla Axtman

First it was the Circuit Court Judges Association who let Mark Nelson go over his anti-tax-fairness activities. Then there was noise that Deschutes County might show him the door for the same reason.

Now, the Association of Oregon Faculties has sent him packing as well:

At its September 2009 meeting, the executive board of the Association of Oregon Faculties voted to sever its relationship and not renew its contract with the Public Affairs Counsel, the lobbying firm headed by Mark Nelson. The board’s action resulted directly from Mr. Nelson’s decision to direct the initiative campaigns seeking to overturn the personal and business tax increases passed by the 2009 Legislature in the upcoming election in January 2010.

Nelson has lots of other clients, some who would undoubtedly benefit if the Measures fail. But its got to pinch a little, nonetheless.

Among the clients listed in that database are a city and a county--are they going to continue if the measures fail?

Nelson has been at the same address for lo these many years, both the Nelson Report and Public Affairs Counsel. It is a nondescript building just north of Salem.

Makes one wonder why the "dairy letter" was sent from that address in the Salem warehouse district, rather than from the Nelson address.

And you all said the measures wouldn't lead to a loss of jobs!

You really have to wonder what it takes to shake people loose from working with a lobbyist that is trying his best to deprive them of funds. The one that really gets me is - Oregon PERS Retirees, Inc. Really! What are they thinking?

Top 2% pay MORE than a third of Oregon's services -- How's that for fairness?

    Association of Oregon Faculties loss.
