Idaho white supremacist group considers relocating to John Day

Carla Axtman

Blue Mountain Eagle:

Leaders of the Aryan Nations in Idaho say they want to move the headquarters of their white supremacist movement to Grant County.

Paul R. Mullet, who called himself national director of the movement, was in John Day this week, looking at property to buy for a new "national compound."

The visit stirred concern in many quarters, where residents worried about the neo-Nazi sentiments of the movement and the negative impact that it could have on the community.

The group teaches that the white race is the only one descended from Adam, and that Jews and non-whites are the natural enemies of white people. The mission, outlined on the group's website, is to create a state for the "Aryan race," separate from all non-whites, and a "lawful Congress of our race."

Mullet, wearing a uniform shirt with a swastika patch on it, said the group's goal is to create a homeland for white people.

"That area is the Pacific Northwest," he said. "The blacks have Africa, the Jews have Israel ..."

Mullet said his group's current headquarters is in Athol, Idaho, but it doesn't have the attributes of a real compound. If they can find the right building in John Day, he said, they will be able to provide barracks and space for training recruits, as well as a place for meetings and gatherings.

He wants to hold a national gathering in the county in September 2011.

If you read the rest, you'll find that local residents are none too happy with this prospect.

Discuss.

Let them do it as long as they don't break any laws.

I'm not sure they can legally be stopped. But, the community should make them feel unwelcome, if that's how they feel.

There's a concern (if you read the article) that the reputation they'll bring with them will make it even more difficult for the town to attract business. I'm not so sure they're wrong.

If they can't get in at John Day they should try coming in as a destination resort in Jefferson County.

Actuallly this plan is nothing new- check out the "Territorial Imperative" at Aryan Nations and/or KKK web sites. I can't understand why they would abandon Idaho- anybody know if they have probelms over there?

The Legislature discussed once regulating para-military conduct- I can't remember if they did anything or not- might not be bad to revive that discussion if any can prod some legislative contacts.

As a former resident of John Day, I fail to see the humor in the postings here. This would be a travesty. Grant County suffers from some of the highest unemployment in the state, people become desperate in these situations and someone is liable to sell to these extremists because of financial difficulties. I know they have a Constitutional right to exist, but they certainly don't have a right to be welcomed. It is a shame, but when I hear "Northern Idaho", the first thing that comes to mind is white supremacists. Don't allow this to happen in our state.

Racism. They say that it is taught, passed down. It is clear from the article that is exactly what this group hopes to do in Oregon, teach -- en masse.

Unsettling. Makes me feel thankful though that there are so many people teaching what they teach about humanity and race.

The latest genomic research shows that all of humanity as we know it originated in Africa. In other words, we all came from the same ancestors.

According to this story in the Spokesman Review, Paul R. Mullet moved to Athol Idaho about a year ago from Ohio. His expressed goal is to revive the Aryan nations movement to it's former glory days before the Southern Poverty Law Center bankrupted the group and it's now deceased leader.

The community in northern Idaho and north eastern Washington have rallied to to oppose them. It appears that Mullet now thinks John Day Oregon is a better place for him to revive Butlers violent hate group.

Now is the time for action. I urge everyone to contact their State Rep and State Senator right now while they are still in session and urge them to pass a joint resolution stating that Mullet, his racism, and the Aryan Nation thugs are not welcome or wanted in Oregon.

So a wing of the Tea Party is moving to rural Oregon.

Thanks for the news, let me know when you have the article that exposes the Tea Party movement as the extreme right-wing, nativist xenophobe Republicans who are afraid to be called Republican due to the results of 2006 and 2008.

When you have a movement that is anti-tax, anti-immigration, and anti-Government at it's core, then you do not have a third movement or a credible political movement. All you have is a bunch of extremist, fringe Republicans.

The Tea Party is highly reminiscent of the Know Nothing movement during the 1840s and 1850s against German and Irish Catholic Immigrants. Except this time, they have the nerve to associate themselves with the Boston Tea Party and the object of their animus are brown-skinned immigrants from Latin and South America and all the Government taxing and big government that keeps these "illegals" here and taking away "American" jobs.

Finally, as the Know Nothings and other right-wing nativist movements have shown in the past, they do not form into a credible political party. They post their gains in one to two election cycles and then die.

I find this discussion very interesting. It appears that no one in this discussion was standing on the corner in John Day on Saturday morning. When you are holding a no-hate sign and someone drives by and gives you the Nazi salute, you know how serious this is. This is not a political issue it is a social justice issue. Both sides of the political spectrum in Grant county stood shoulder to shoulder to proclaim that we are not going to tolerate hate groups. Known Aryan Nations members were observed by the police in attendance. This is very serious in our small community. We may not have the number of minorities larger communities have, but we want them to know they are safe. Please ask yourself how you would be thinking about these events, if it was your neighbor or best friend. Maybe you would realize that this is not a joking matter. Please instead of editorializing, come up with some viable ideas that will help us deal with this problem. thank you

Please keep us informed about events in Grant County and let us know what we can do to help. One of the reasons that these creeps want to leave north Idaho is the strong community response to their violence and hate. This included support from the citizens of Spokane as well. We in Oregon can stand up against hate as well.

Beth, if I'd been home in John Day, I would have been there with you. The suggestions of "someone" are very intuitive, the first people I'd talk to are the realtors in Grant County. Of course, the AN will probably send front people to buy property, so vigilance is needed. And the business people through-out Oregon should refuse to do business with any one who supports these extremists. That limits what they do in John Day, it's a long way to the next store.

  • Lona (unverified)
    (Show?)

Gayle's comment (re: local businesses refusing to do business) is wise. Living in Grant County is a challenge due to it's isolation from major metropolitan areas. We very much depend on our local suppliers to survive. Without them, it would be very difficult for the AN to build up much of anything in the way of a headquarters. And thank you Beth for steering this thread away from sarcasm and into practical advice. We need as much as we can get. Comments from anyone who has personally dealt with this scenario in their own areas would be welcomed.

They mentioned three properties in one of the articles- community members should buy them or take them off the market.

If you wait until they get in it will be too late. They can rub to Madras or Prineville and shop undetected.

You need to become educated about cult behavior. What you need to make people understand that this an anti-US government para-military cult. They will be looking to recruit your children.

This could devastate the community because property values will drop and make it easier for more cult members to move in. These are old tricks cults use. Look at the Scientologist in Florida for example.

They will be voting in your local elections and they are smart enough to have sympathizers that don't "wear the colors." In some ways they thrive on conflict with the public as it gets them the publicity that they desparately need. Fighting an enemy give cohesiveness to the group so prepared to be demonized in every way possible.

I don't envy people that stay to fight.

Getting in touch with the realtors in the area would be key (especially the ones representing the sellers). One way to exert pressure to prevent a sale from happening would be if the realtors themselves felt responsible--they are after all going to make money on the sale, no matter who buys. Make it clear that any realtors making such a sale will be called out.

Another question is--why have they decided on John Day? Family connection, other?

When I first came to the John Day Valley in the early 1950s, there were no Blacks or Hispanics living there. The most hated and feared folk were the Okies and Arkies who had arrived in old beater trucks to work in the Log Mills and Timber Industry. They lived in shanties along Canyon Creek, and they hated Blacks and Hispanics and Fags. For the past forty years I have lived about an hour's drive from the North Idaho Compound of the same Nazi, Aryan Nations group who want to move into Grant County. All they want is to draw attention to themselves. They march and picket everything. They want the publicity you are giving them. I didn't know that John Day had become so progressive. Are you telling me that you are now ready to have a Gay Pride Parade in downtown John Day? Give me a date, and I'll be there with my "rainbow" flag.

So, if your high school does that, do you have to ask the winner if he wants to be king or queen? Seems a bit sexist, otherwise. I was a class officer in HS and always loved to find ways to streamline the bureaucracy. I would have supported a shemale and let the person be both king and queen.

You can start with Samuel Langhorn Clemons.

I'm pretty tired of your lot. Would at least one of you answer my basic question about IDs? I prosecute bastards. I make lots of enemies. I used my real name once and had to take out 3 restraining orders. Now, are you offering to pay my legal bills or do you think that that means I shouldn't have a say? I have complained ad nauseam about BO not using some kind of validated ID scheme. As it stands the primary key is email, which you can't see. We can all only think of about a dozen schemes that would be infinitely better than this "Men's Room Daily" format.

To date, I've seen only three kinds of people whining about pseudonyms. Media whores that count their name recognition as net worth and don't know why everyone can't do the same, people that haven't thought it through, and people that can only engage in ad hominem attacks and feel unarmed without knowing who they're talking to. Enlighten me about how you're a fourth kind, or tell me which of the aforementioned you are.

I'll bet my last thin dime its the last kind I mentioned. Some say "most behavior is its own punishment". For all those that can't think until they know the personality talking, can't judge anything on the merit of the facts, I hope you love the pig in the poke you put in the White House!
