Jeff Mapes, Oregonian:

Oregonians are far from united when it comes to issues surrounding taxes and government spending.

Perhaps we could get a better idea if the questions were there:

Are you willing to increase taxes to guarantee a minimum of 8% return regardless of actual fund performance for Tier 1 PERS members, even though your personal accounts were off 35% in the last downturn?

Are you willing to increase taxes to guarantee salary and benefits packages to PERS workers, while unemployment, underemployment and wage deflation have been rampant in the private sector?

As you are approaching paying 50% of your wages to state/fed/local/gas/property/water/phone/power/building permit taxes, what percentage do you think is enough? 65%, 75%, 99%?

If taxpayers were taxed at a 100% rate, would the state spend it?

Will you be happy to pay the taxes on your current health care benefits as income starting in 2011? 28% of $1000 per month equals another $280. (Sounds like more expensive health care to me, but what do I know...)

Do you find it ironic that they are calling it a "rainy day fund" in a state where it rains every freaking day?

Ted Kulongoski and friends raised the state budget by approx $2.7 billion a year for this biennium, (over 10%) and now the shortfall is estimated at over $1.5 billion this year. Do you see any relationship between the two numbers above?

Maybe Jeff could get a better feel for what really is going on out there if he asked some real questions.

Be sure to include the "have you stopped beating your wife yet?" question as well. That would fit in well with your unbiased, non-steering questions. (smirk)
